Thompson has admitted today on workplace, believe it or not, he wasn't in the negotiating room all day Monday - he said he was there at the start to explain, once again, RM's position, then popped in at the end of the day to see how things were going!!

They're just stringing it out in a vain attempt to get the union to suspend the strikes on the run up to our busiest time of year. He just shows utter contempt for the whole process when he can't even sit through a whole session of talks. The man is absolutely pathetic. The whole board are a bunch of overpaid, underworked pigs, with their noses well and truly in the trough.

You would have thought that someone who desperately wanted to resolve this dispute would be there all day trying to do just that, or at least bridging the gap between the two sides...

Surely they wouldn't scheduled further talks and go through all the issues with a fine toothcomb if they were not seeking some sort of settlement.
They underestimated the strength of the picket lines and now they realise we will strike all the way through they have come to the table with serious negotiations.
Just because he is not there all throughout the meetings doesn't mean nothing will come of these talks.
Maybe he is reluctantly coming to the table now as he knows it's really the only option to save Christmas.
Even if he isn't or doesn't want to be there.

He said, his own words, if everything goes well today, he wants to go to ACAS next week... I, for one, would LOVE a deal to be done that's acceptable to both sides, but I'm not holding my breath...

The fact he wasn't there didn't appear to deter the union negotiators.
If it is such a big issue why did they carry on with the meeting?

I don't think RM give a s**t about the strikes (apart from it gave them the ammunition to ditch the legally binding agreements)
They are now in negotiations because the CWU have dropped the insistence on a no strings pay rise and, it would appear, any opposition to the parcel hubs.

But if I were the CEO and I really wanted an end to this dispute, which is costing money and loss of business, I would be there in person to show I meant business... And how long have the union negotiators been negotiating now? And just because the union seemed to have dropped their no strings pay deal, doesn't mean RM are going to give them what they want or anything that is acceptable to the union members ... You are right, at this point it seems it's just the union compromising..

He may have absented himself from the talks as he's deemed as the problem. As was said yesterday, the talks had moved on a small amount. The chairman can always remove a CEO, it'll be up to the main shareholders and where they see the problem lies.
