The Agenda for Growth agreement stopped Royal Mail from doing that for 10 years.

That's a giant leap of faith Martin.
It's also a giant pile of something else.

I know you were a fanboy of the legal protections, you were after all one of its greatest salesmen but any decent lawyer would tell you it had more holes than a string vest and the union was never going to venture anywhere near a court with it.

What stopped a two tier workforce in Royal Mail was a combination of circumstances nothing more, it just wasn't the right time. Had covid not intervened we would probably have faced this 3 years ago. Obviously now is the time.

Reading the comments it seems we have opened a can of worms by striking.And I get the feeling striking will not do any good as royal mail hold all the aces?so where to go next can/should we keep fighting.And how on earth would a 2 tier workforce work.with the current p/t f/t and then another set of workers who work more hours than a current full timer...

They won’t recognise our last agreement and they sure as f**k won’t recognise any other
If we don’t strike they rip us to shreds and the job won’t be worth doing you will be as well moving to Amazon
Our terms and conditions will be every bit as bad and probably for less money the way this is heading
We need massive action and we need the tuc on board with other unions

The 40 hours for new starts is not new starts on 40 hour contracts but their pay will be based on 40 hours so less per hour pro rata than current part timers who’s pay is based on 37

So from all I’ve read this week it seems that there’s absolutely no point in striking or voicing any opposition to what are very poor working conditions proposed by Royal Mail as they’re going to bring in absolutely anything they want to

No point in the union anymore then.

We’ll all have to work 10 am to 10 pm and only be paid for about 8 of those hours as the rest will be banked and given back to us at some point in the future ….maybe.

As we’re having to work longer , walk further and faster which will increase the chances of being sick , your sick pay will be worthless.

You’ll have no employment rights working for Royal Mail either.

They’re doing this so people leave apparently ( well , one of the reasons ) but who tf would want to do this job u get those conditions? Most employers are falling over backwards to make jobs attractive these days as there’s not much of pool of work workers fighting for jobs.

I’ll strike when needed and back the people I work with but I’ve never felt so poorly about the job.

I’ll be getting out as soon as I can.

I do think Martin is right about slowing this from happening it did seem to stop moya,Rico,its all since Keith Williams took over.

My wife works for BT, they have broken up the company with open reach etc, they have outsourced work all round the world where it could be done cheaper, they have franchised and they a two-tier workforce.

I don't think it's a very sensible idea for the CWU to promote the idea that the only way Royal Mail were able to break the chains of this super secure ground breaking legal protection was because the CWU called national industrial action.

It would possibly be better to be more honest and admit that the agreement was about to be broken anyway using any number of potential get out clauses that had been available from the start than promote the same narrative that Simon is pushing that we were the architects of our own downfall.

It's probably time to put egos aside and move on, the agreement is dead now, so is the argument on whether it had any real value in the first place.

We will have to agree to disagree over whether the Agenda for Growth Legal protections helped to stop , outsourcing , franchising and the break up of the company like so many other privatised companies or whether other circumstances did as you suggest. Neither of us can be proven to be right.

However tomorrow the PE will debate the next phase of strike action and unless that debate needs to go into Wednesday for a decision to be made then by close of play tomorrow all members should know. Remember the Officers make recommendations to the 17 voting members of the Postal Executive, the officers don’t have a vote. The PE are allowed to amend the recommendations.

It’s literally make or break so whatever is decided , make sure it hits all parts of royal mails business and enough to actually get their attention and be sensible around a deal.

Just distribution/logistics/network alone would hit RM really hard as nothing could travel between MCs or between MCs and DOs
