Question regarding EU originating parcels post Brexit

Post by ironmonkey »

If in the event of no deal, the government has said that goods originating from the EU destined to the UK that are not controlled goods (like alcohol and tobacco) will NOT require import declarations until 30th June 2021.

In the event of no deal, following 1st Jan onwards, for someone purchasing goods for personal use (not business) from an EU country. When the parcel gets to the UK boarder - will the parcel undergo the exact same procedure/checks that is currently in situ now (as we are in the transition period) till June 30th 2021?

Or will the parcel be handled as if it came from USA, China, Australia etc?

Little confused about this - i just feel the UK have not planned, have the infrastructure or man power in place to start checking EU originating parcels/goods as they do for country's under "WTO"?

I would have thought the checks in place after the 1st January would be the same as those for any non-EU country as the transition period ends on the 1st and so AFAIK it'll be WTO rules from then

Not sure if you have read this before https://www.avalara.com/vatlive/en/vat- ... onths.html

Just wondering if that means in the 6 months till June 30th the same checks will apply for eu originating goods destined for the UK that are not alcohol or tobacco?

As far as I know Royal Mail don't do any checks, the Customs staff do that, hopefully they will be aware of the new processes and the transistion will be seamless.
