Where is my customers parcel

Post by MikeMe »

I post my parcel to the USA on the 23rd May, tracked & Signed, my customer is complaining that he has not received it. Looked up the tracking and report says 'We have received your item at LANGLEY HWDC, our international processing centre. Your item is being prepared for despatch overseas.' This was on the 24th May. so has it been sent or held at Langley as there is no following information.

You asked where the item is? It is at Langley HWDC, which is where Royal Mail items go before being put on the plane.

The bigger question is why is it still there? There have been some delays to items getting on flights, but not that long. Given where it stopped, there is a good chance that Royal Mail suspect that the contents are banned by the Dangerous Goods Act or US customs rules. What did you send?

Jus a mineral specimen 'rock' for a collector. I have no problem sending theese normally and the discription was on the customs form.

Just checked tracking and it arrived in New York sorting office today

I would suggest that RM missed the tracking point when it was put on the plane. Inevitably, mistakes do happen.

It is difficult to tell without the missing tracking point, but it is possible that a mineral sample would be held up at Langley while they checked it against the customs list. The problem being that there are a number of things on USA’s prohibitions and restrictions that are close enough to ‘mineral specimen’ that they would need to send it for extra checking before declaring it suitable for despatch. For instance, this passage from the restrictions section:
Inorganic chemicals; organic or inorganic compounds of precious metals, of rare-earth metals, of radioactive elements or of isotopes
In more normal times you might not notice this extra time, but under current circumstances everything takes longer.
