In progress fraud and Special delivery package

Post by Wendym »

Hello, I am reaching out for specific help as I am the victim of an in progress fraud.

The short version, On Tuesday I sold a phone on Gumtree and received a (fake) PayPal email confirming funds would be released when I provided a tracking number.
On Wednesday I posted the package Special Delivery, got home to realise the PayPal was fake and then spent most of yesterday speaking with action fraud / Royal Mail security / Royal Mail customer helpline/ local PO
I have a crime reference number

Today I went to the PO and they called Royal Mail Security again, who have said that if local police can get to Clevedon West End Post Office today (before 2) they may be able to release the parcel to them... otherwise the package will go into the system and I would need to contact the Met as the package is destined for London N22

As an aside the house number and postcode do not match, but it went through at the post office. Royal mail help have said it may get scanned and returned to sender if it were to get to the N22 sorting office.....

I feel very stupid for having been so gullible, and am at my wits end to know what to do next. I will try to get hold of the local police, but not sure if they have the manpower to deal with this today...
If you can give me any advice I would appreciate it very much.

There isn't much more you can but you could also check your home insurance you may be covered under that, but it is a long shot.

I'll be honest I don't trust Gumtree as it should be a local face to face transaction, and I don't fully trust eBay as either, neither site protects sellers and buyers enough in my opinion.

I hope it all gets sorted for you.

Once it has entered the system it's illegal to intercept it, even the police won't be allowed to intercept it

I don't have the answer for you but I have in the past had the Police and Dom turn up and take a fraudulent special delivery item off of me whilst I was out on delivery.
We're all here because we're not all there

I was told once that when it comes to a special delivery item that it's even illegal for the police to intercept it
