Parcel from USA being returned to sender without being delivered to me

Hello,

On February 6th, I ordered some model train gears and dc electric motors from a supplier in Montana, USA. On Thursday February 13th the package containing them was tracked by the USPS as having passed through Heathrow Airport. So far, nothing unusual. Then, to my horror, the Royal Mail's tracking service posts an update on the package this morning stating the following:

"Item is being prepared for re-export in order to return it to the sender."

The USPS Tracking Number, which is bringing-up that message on the Royal Mail Tracking service, is LX684878335US

I cannot understand why the Royal Mail or, more likely, HMRC would do this? The order receipt from the supplier clearly shows my correct UK address, which they must have used on the package. Unless there was an issue with the US Customs Declaration, which I have never had before. Or with the contents of the package, which are either inert (the metal gears) or have no power source (the 2 motors need mains power to operate, and they will obviously not have that inside a package), I cannot think of an explanation.

Because I was not aware of the update until after 1pm today, I could not call the Royal Mail and find out what is wrong. I will try them again before close of business at 2pm tomorrow, but my fear is that the package will be on its way back to Montana before normal service resumes on Monday morning.

What do I do?!

It looks like he had a custom fee to pay...
