advice on sending airmails

Post by heathenmagic »

Hi there,

I am a business customer. I do have an account manager, but to be frank the current one we have is not so helpful (such as taking four months to resolve an issue, which is still not resolved). We do contact a head account manager, but they just refer us back to the other one.
We have been sending airmail the same way for maybe 15 years - PPI label with printed address on 4" by 2.5" label. I know airmail reliability is determined by the destination country, but the past year it has been a bit strange in that countries that have been 100% reliable in the past, we have had INR reports. Coupled with some signed for / tracked that have gone to the wrong country but then rerouted to the country that was printed on the the address label, I just wondered if there was any tips or advice on how we can do our best from our side?
I know a lot of the sorting is done by machine / computers somehow, I am not sure if non signed and signed are somehow being sent to wrong countries sometimes in general? I know not all buyers are honest, that might be a small factor here. Though if packages are being scanned and sent to wrong country then rerouted (can take nearly a month), buyers might not be forthcoming to let us know once refund / replacement is sorted.

I am using 2D barcode labels for UK at the moment, I can see the option for airmail to use that format of 6" x 4" label. I realise they are not delivery confirmed internationally. Though I saw in another forum that somebody did not get on so well trying that method - I think the small text size of the address lines might be the issue there, and places such as Italy can have massive addresses compared to UK ones.
Blue airmail stickers are being used, and customs applied where needed. I would have thought the 4" by 2.5" labels would be okay, but I am not sure if there is a better way or if the sorting / scanning has changed in some regard.

Sorry for the long post, thanks for your time, I am grateful for any pointers or tips you may have.
Thanks in advance.

Sorry to bump this post. Again we had this happen, yet another frustrated customer and spent so much time chasing this up. Percentage wise its not negligible now, the labels are clear. This one we had for Portugal, ended up in Italy and being diverted. This doesn't seem to happen with couriers, and the shipping label text on theirs is tiny in comparison. I asked our account manager if writing in pen elsewhere the destination country would help, again no reply. Was a genuine question, I know postal staff work extremely hard, I didn't want to risk spite if we did start writing in large characters on the package elsewhere would help?

Regards,
James
