new to the forum,
I've posted 5 items next day guaranteed UK-UK, I've double checked the tracker an no progress has been made on both 5 items I posted.
Status: its on its way
trackpoint: sent at post office
Usually it should have updated me that it has been received by the mail centre and dispatchable to x mail centre according to where item is addressed to.
This items was posted today 29/12/2015, right after Royal Mail resumes regular services from christmas rush, could that have anything to do with the delay in terms of tracking no being updated?
I had an occasion where the tracking info skipped my local mail centre and went straight to the recipient mail centre, with the outcome being delivered.
any suggestions would be grateful

What time of the day were they posted - you might have missed the last collection of the day from that post office

one of the 5 items was sent to london, so London to London. As i suspected they completely missed the step for my local mail office and went straight to the recipients mail centre, luckily this one is out for delivery:

however the remaining 4 items that are due to arrive in the northern part of the UK (northern ireland and scotland) no tracking info has been updated apart from being scanned at my local postie, could this be due to the sheer amount of orders Royal mail are receiving due to the back date, or due to weather conditions we are receiving?

Along with the usual potential problems (that known fault with the tracking, for instance) parts of the north have severe flooding. It could be that items are being held back at the local mail centre until the flooding problems have gone away.
The normal mail in London was operating very fast in the run up to Christmas, at least with respect to greetings cards. So I doubt there is a backlog. This week is traditionally quiet in the mail system.
