Advice regarding outgoing package please

Hi guys,
Sorry to bother you but i wonder if you could help me with some information. :wave
I have sent a package to the US tracked/signed for.
My question is this:
At what stages are you notified of where the package is at any particular time.
I posted it on Friday morning and in the evening I got an update saying it had been
passed to the overseas postal service for delivery in UNITED STATES OF AMERICA.
Will I receive any more notifications now or will it stay like this until it actually reaches American soil?

P.S. Does it go through the customs service first or is that done at the overseas depot?

No more updates from Royal Mail - they'll rely on USPS to update the tracking.

It will go through Customs at both ends to check on its legal/tax status. But it will also go through Homeland Security Checks at the US side. All of this will happen after Royal Mail pass it on and before USPS get it.

I know I'm being thick but I am assuming that it could still be in the UK centre? It is confusing because the wording gives the impression that it is already outside the UK somewhere or actually landed in the US.
