Royal Mail Don't Understand Their Own Prohibited Items List!
I posted some Air Gun parts that included a buddy bottle, brass adaptor, o-rings and some airgun lead pellets to a mate.
The bottle was empty and has a gauge on it. Its an inanimate object basically.
Some idiot at the National Returns Centre has apparently inspected it and destroyed it! The worse thing is it got within 9 miles of its destination. Then was bounced around the country for three weeks. RM tracking and information was severely lacking to say the least. I never got the same answer twice from customer services.
If they are going to open a parcel and inspect things then it should be done properly. This item was clearly safe and a two second inspection would prove it.
They could have easily removed the valve, it was only hand tight, sent it back in bits by road and told me to avoid doing it in future.
Now a valuable air gun is without parts costing hundred of pounds and as a RM account holder I am very tempted to tell them to stick their account where the sun doesn't shine!
My advice to fellow enthusiasts is don't put your air guns or bits into the RM system unless you want to loose it! Use a decent carrier!

RM doesn't have anything to do with the inspection of items, it's down to (I think) the CAA. I think it's also the CAA that destroys any item they deam dangerous. Was there a return address on the packaging? I can't think of any other reason for it to be sent to the NRC

Who knows what is fact or fiction here? The letter is from Royal Mail. I was told National Returns Centre but is seems to have come from Dangerous Goods in Barnsley. The items were boxed in a Royal Mail Special poly bag. My return address on it and also on my postage PPI label.SpacePhoenix wrote:RM doesn't have anything to do with the inspection of items, it's down to (I think) the CAA. I was told yesterday that it just couldn't be destroyed that quickly only yesterday as it was logged back to Aberdeen CO at about 16:40 the night before. It wasn't even logged in at the NRS yet.
However in today's post I get a letter saying deemed dangerous, destroyed.
Thieving, abusive vandalism of third party property!

if it contained a compressed gas cylinder(the buddy bottle) then it was clearly in breach of the prohibited items list and as such the offending item will be disposed of. regardless of whether the cylinder was pressurised or not it was in breach of the regulations and should not have been sent.Specman wrote:Who knows what is fact or fiction here? the item will not be returned back to you, it may not be destroyed and infact may be sold to recoup some of the costs incurred in inspecting prohibited items
Royal mail doesnt make the rules but do have to enforce them.
it is was sent to the NRC as they are the only place within Royal Mail allowed to open and inspect mail, whether it be because it appears to be a firearm or if its a suspected prohibited item
Its not theft it clearly stated in the terms and conditions of carriage of prohibited goods that this may happen

Re: Royal Mail Don't Understand Their Own Prohibited Items L
It's not compressed gas, no gas in it! An empty bottle is just metal, not pressurised. Also air gun parts. This just shows how absolutely clueless they are. And if they sell them on eBay I would like to know just how they are going to post it?zx135 wrote:if it contained a compressed gas cylinder(the buddy bottle) then it was clearly in breach of the prohibited items list and as such the offending item will be disposed of. regardless of whether the cylinder was pressurised or not it was in breach of the regulations and should not have been sent.Specman wrote:Who knows what is fact or fiction here? This is theft and they have some cheek. When it appears on eBay I will report it as theft, I have the serial numbers. Believe me when I say RM will pay for this I will close my account before I let them get off with this. That will cost them 30k per annum!

Re: Royal Mail Don't Understand Their Own Prohibited Items L
They should make things more clear in their restricted items.
Most Airguns today run on CO2 or compressed air and use bottles. Airgun parts are listed as able to send. This is deliberately misleading. These are parts for an air gun. If some parts are restricted it should say so. It was sent in good faith.

they usually use a dealer who will probably send the items via a courier that can carry these items without them going on an aircraft
again it is not theft

Re: Royal Mail Don't Understand Their Own Prohibited Items L
this is the bit it has falled foul of in the prohibited items list, yes i do agree that it does state compressed gas and in your case there was none and just an empty bottle, but in the link i posted above RM have stated that they consider an empty compressed gas container to be in breach of these conditions
Gases
Gases that are compressed, liquefied or dissolved under pressure, permanent gases which cannot be liquefied at ambient temperatures, liquefied gases which become liquid under pressure at ambient temperatures, dissolved gases which are dissolved under pressure in a solvent.
1. All flammable compressed gases are prohibited e.g. blowlamps; butane; lighters and refills containing flammable liquid or gas; ethane; gas cylinders for camping stoves; hydrogen; methane and propane.
2. All toxic compressed gases are prohibited e.g. chlorine; fluorine etc.
3. All non-flammable compressed gases are prohibited e.g. air bags; scuba tanks, carbon dioxide; fire extinguishers; neon and nitrogen.

No wonder you are angry. It is just as i have been thinking all along about thair x-ray machine operaters as well. Now they had my air rifle action AND,EMPTY BUDDY BOTTLE,for 4 weeks. The expert who inspected it said, I never breached any of thair rules, and returned it all in tact to me,with a letter attached, saying i never breached any of thair rules. So this leads me to believe,it is pot luck who opens and inspects your parcel, same goes for the x-ray machine operater, all down to the one guy,and his desicion. If you want a copy of the letter, they put in my box,as proof of thair inconsistint desicion making, let me know, but i fear it will be a long process for you.
Good luck
