Can I ship this item overseas?

Post by Tinkerbell93 »

I want to ship a lava lamp to the USA to someone I know for Christmas. I'm aware of these laws about liquids and whatever but am I able to ship a lava lamp? I think it just contains wax and water doesn't it?

Read the prohibitions bit, if it's on there then no you can't... but I don't think it is on there. Make sure it's very well wrapped/protected if you do send it!

The list for the UNITED STATES (lol) says these are prohibited:

Aviation regulated solids or liquids substances with narcotic, noxious or irritating characteristics that can cause extreme annoyance or discomfort to people if leakage occurs.
Flammable fuels, oils and their products.
Explosives, flammable materials such as pyrophoric, flammable, or combustible liquids, and flammable solids, oxidizers, corrosives, liquid or solid, compressed gases and poisons, radioactive materials. Explosives, inflammable materials, and mechanical, chemical or other devices of compositions which may ignite or explode, including caps and loaded metal cartridges.

but I don't know if lava lamps count :/

Probably best to check with the manufacturers to be honest, some of them use carbon tetrachloride which is poisonous. It presents a danger to pets and small children who could accidentally ingest the lava lamp contents upon breaking/spilling the lamp. Oral doses as low as 400 mg/kg have resulted in the death of cats, while oral doses as low as 40 mg/kg have reportedly caused death in humans. Inhalation of carbon tetrachloride fumes is also dangerous.

If it uses carbon tetrachloride then its probably best not to send it by air because of the pressure changes - but as I say check with the manufacturer they should be able to advise.

Oh okay, thank you. If for whatever reason I won't be able to send it, can I send it via something else like FedEx?
