Special Delivery Items - Is actual item weight recorded?

Hi,

I'm just looking for some advice really. I recently got "stung" on ebay by a seller selling damaged iphones. They claimed to have sent the item in a small cardboard box via RM Special Delivery. Now, I received the box but it was empty (apart from a small piece of bubblewrap). After a little detective work on my part I have established they paid 6.35 for the postage which I understand covers the parcel weight upto 500g. The box I received weighed 145g. If I add an Iphone complete with box & accessories to the equation the weight is approx 550grams (inc the outer box & bubblewrap). To my way of thinking, this would have required postage costs to be 7.55 not 6.35. However, after contacting the seller about this, and raising a dispute through ebay/paypal (still ongoing), the seller refused to send me a copy/image of the original receipt obtained when they posted it. As they state it's required to make a claim for lost item from RM which I know to be true.

However, without access to the receipt, is there anyway I can find out the actual weight of the item when it was posted? (as I suspect it will read around 145grams, i.e. empty box). I know this info is printed on the receipt you get when you post the item but is it recorded anywhere on RM's systems for paper trail or similar?. The item was posted on the 17th of Sept I still have the box that was received, along with the tracking number sticker, postage label with costs, SAD number etc. I also know the exact post office that was used to send the item. As stated, I may be wrong but I suspect they are trying to scam RM compensation system for each "lost/stolen" iphone.

Currently, I am 1 out of 5 people they have done this to within the last month. All 5 seem to have "disappeared". Very odd??. I am fully prepared to lose my 140.00 that I paid for this item if it means I can stop them from ripping off others/RM claims etc.

You should not contact royal mail or post office.. if I was you I would contact eBay urgently and if you have paid by PayPal then you will be refunded the money as they will start a case against the seller ! Also give the seller bad feedback as this will deter people from buying from him again and help prevent this from happening ! ... It's a sad world we live in
