Hi, I'm not sure if I'm posting this in the right forum but hopefully someone here could help.
I'm a journalist for the Northern Echo newspaper in the North East. I'm currently working on a story about a group of residents who have organised a petition (with over 1000 signatures) and a protest march in support of their postman who is being forced off his round in Hemlington, Middlesbrough after working it for more than 27 years. Apparently he does not want to be moved and the residents obviously don't want to lose him either.
If anyone has any comments on this issue, I'd be very interested in hearing them, either via a response on here, or you can email me at joannalouise2912@gmail.com. Has this happened to any of you? What is the process and why is it happening? What do you think of it? Should he be able to keep his round?

This kind of story is a common one especially with Posties who get on with their customers.
However, the other side of the coin hardly ever gets mentioned.
At the moment Royal Mail is going through one of the largest re-organisations and modernisation schemes ever seen in the UK. We used to mainly deliver from cycles and pouches, with separate vans delivering the larger items or to the addresses that had large volumes of mail.
However Royal Mail are now moving towards 2 posties delivering everything in their area from a single van. Also to get the weight off their shoulders Royal Mail are rolling out modern trolleys. The idea being the 2 posties do a loop each, with both loops ideally being centred on the parked van. This means that ALL rounds in the UK are being changed some more than others.
The Union are backing this new method.
That's the background to why changes are being made - Now as to posties being forced off rounds. Well again the background is that when you join Royal Mail your contract states that the Communications Workers Union works with Royal Mail and together they come up with collective agreements that are voted on by CWU members.
One of these agreements covers what we call resigns (as in signing for a delivery) and that means that a set procedure with various parameters and settings must be followed during the resign to keep it fair and above board for everyone. What has probably happened in this case is that the postie either does not have the skills required for the new duty structure, or he was displaced by a longer serving postie who selected the round before he could.
To be honest it is nice to see campaigns like this which show appreciation for Postie concerned, but the flip side is rarely report that this is a standard process within Royal Mail and having accepted a contract of employment to work with Royal Mail you by definition accept collective agreements, even when, as in this case, means you don't get what you want.
I'll also be honest and say that this campaign has little chance of succeeding as although I have heard of a few of these campaigns being started, I have never heard of one actually being successful.

This is happening in most offices due to the revision. There are 3 or 4 that I know of in my office that have had the same duty for 20 odd years and have now been given other duties. Some duties have been broken up, most paired with another as part of 'Park and Loop', which has resulted in a major movement of postmen.

folks want a modernised RM don't they?

So why is it when a change affects people they are interested?
