Question about DBS checking services

Post by Checkmate »

Hi folks

I am in the middle of a bit of what might be a wild goose chase.

I am unemployed and it seems a nice idea to get myself on the DBS update service as I'd like to work in Mental Health.

My stumbling block is that as a private person I can only apply for a basic check.

But to be on the update service, I need a "standard" or "enhanced" check.

I thought that maybe I'd stumbled into something here:

https://www.postoffice.co.uk/identity/dbs-checks

Is it possible that I could get myself a standard or enhanced check through the Post Office?

If anyone's got any anecdotal thoughts on the DBS update service, I'd be keen to hear them.

Regards

The Post Office acts as an identity verifier, not an application service for standard and enhanced checks. This means you cannot apply for these checks directly as a private individual through the Post Office.

Here’s how the process works for standard and enhanced DBS checks, and the Post Office's role in it:

Employer/Organisation-Led Application: Standard and enhanced checks can only be requested by an employer or an organisation on your behalf, such as a recruitment agency or an umbrella body.

The Post Office's Role: If your employer or organisation directs you to, you can use the Post Office to have your identity documents (e.g., passport, driving licence) verified in person. The Post Office then sends a verification report back to the organisation that is managing your application.

Applying as a Private Person: You can only apply for a basic DBS check as a private individual. This check reveals unspent convictions and cautions.

In summary, to get a standard or enhanced DBS check, you must be applying for an eligible role with an organisation that will request the check for you. The Post Office can help with the identity verification step, but they cannot initiate the application for you.

Thank you!

Huddersfield fan, I take it?

I've lived in Leeds for 16 years but find LUFC a bit problematic frankly. Farke is the best thing about them by a long chalk.
