Hi there,
Is there anyone there who can help me with identifying marks and their meanings on franked mail?
I am in receipt of a piece of mail and I know exactly where it came from in the UK as there is a business address printed on the envelope in the top left hand corner, so this is not an issue, but can you tell me what the following marks mean?:
There is an elongated barcode in black ink underneath which is the word "Zone A" followed by another elongated barcode this time in orange ink. At the bottom of the envelope is another different elongated barcode also in orange ink.
In between the two orange barcodes there is a series of numbers printed in black ink, and at the very top right of the envelope there is a sticker marked "The Delivery Group" saying "Delivered by Royal Mail" with the alfanumeric code "C9 10017", which I know refers to UK mail.
What do each of these elements of identfing marks relate to? I am especially interested in the barcodes as there is no date on the envelope and I think it may be possible that these barcodes contain this information.
Also, why are there three barcodes? Why are two of them orange and one black? What does the number sequence inbetween the two orange barcodes refer to? And where will all these barcodes and number sequences be read on my letter's journey to me?
Thank you so much,
Evergreen

The first Orange barcode relates to a machine code from the OCR machine at Royal Mail.
It takes a photo of the address as well and the next machine LSM will remember the barcode and the address and allocate it to the correct box on the machine.
I also know that C9 is a DSA code, so RM will know the letter has come from a competitor, even though RM have to deliver the "last mile", so to speak.
The other black codes could be our competitors machines, reading the address and making sure it goes onto the correct lorry before being accepted at RM.
In general, its nothing important other than to fast track the item through the Mail Centre asap.
