Post Office Local Collect

I've used Post Office Local Collect before, but can't find an answer to this simple question.

The online companies who offer it let you choose it as a delivery option, then usually charge a fee (although it appears free to both parties). An online company who don't offer it have agreed to let me order using it. Is it as simple as addressing my package to 'My Name c/o Post Office Local Collect' followed by the full address of the Post Office?

Or does anything else need to be in place, e.g. registration of the online company with Royal Mail? I ask because RM's online help says:
'We’ll send your customer an SMS and/or email when their parcel is ready to be collected from their chosen branch.'
Which implies RM or the Post Office have been given my details by the sender. What would this helpful online company need to do first?

If there is no contract in place then the Post Office should refuse the item “not known at this address”. So I don’t recommend doing this.

So you are saying there is some sign-up procedure needed by the seller first?

Yes, they need a contract with the Post Office and / or Royal Mail so that the PO get paid for doing it. And as other organisations have to pay they should refuse anyone trying to do it for free.

A few years ago on delivery I had an item like this for delivery to a PO. As snaggetooth said, the PO refused delivery because they had no idea who the person was - and they were actually quite concerned that someone had done it.
Royal Mail
failing the workforce, failing the public and deliberately failing mail on a daily basis for too many years.

Thanks both for clarifying this, I see the PO won't get paid otherwise. I will remind the company to sign a contract with RM if they do this, but it doesn't sound like a one-off for a single customer, maybe they didn't know as I didn't.

Who pays the PO, I assume RM as somewhere they say it's free to company & customer? And where should I point the company to sign-up?
