Recorded/Signed For 1st Class Stamps?

Post by SHawking »

So I was helping to clean out my father’s desk over the weekend (basically a drawer that’s been used for storage for years) and I found some of these Recorded/Signed For 1st Class Stamps. They look like this:

I did a bit of research and it looks like the Royal Mail (or rather the Post Office) stopped making these stamps as of October 2021. Can I (or my father for that matter) still use these stamps to send Recorded/Signed For 1st Class mail?

For example, if I want to send a simple letter in a C5 envelope, can I just put 1 of these stamps on the envelope and get Recorded/Signed For 1st Class postage without paying anything extra? Obviously I presume I would need to take it to a Post Office to get a tracking number etc.

Many thanks for any help :)

Yes but only for another year as RM are changing their stamps to barcoded ones.

You never know a few years down the line these old-style stamps both cancelled and not, may become collector's items.

I would advise using a Crown Post Office, or large town centre one as local Offices may not be fully aware that you can use them.

TBT is right to say that a larger branch is a better bet, or sub that hasn't changed hands in recent years. These stamps were always pretty rare and there will be many clerks who don't recognise them. Unfortunately crown offices are thin on the ground nowadays.

Actually it was Royal Mail: the Post Office does not make stamps.
