Royal Mail insists Dundee on target

Royal Mail today insisted it was meeting its delivery targets in Dundee, despite continuing concerns about the city’s postal service from customers (writes Graham Huband).
The firm, which is in dispute locally with the Communication Workers Union over changes to working practices, has come under fire after householders across the city began to complain of late and missed deliveries.
Dundee West councillor Fraser Macpherson told the Tele about problems faced by residents in his constituency and the focus switched to the city’s east end today when a Broughty Ferry councillor also spoke out.

Cllr Derek Scott said he had written to Royal Mail’s customer service manager in Dundee in a bid to get answers about a situation that has enveloped both Dundee West and Dundee East delivery offices. He said he had been contacted by constituents complaining of three-week long delays in deliveries and even heard from one who missed a hospital visit as their appointment card was not delivered in time.

He said, “The problem needs to be sorted. They (Royal Mail) are a public service and my constituents should not have to lose out as a result of an internal dispute in their organisation.”

A Royal Mail spokesperson again stressed to the Tele today there was no backlog of mail within the two delivery offices and said negotiations were ongoing to reach an amicable resolution.

She said, “We wish to assure customers that we are doing all we can to ensure any disruption to service is kept to a minimum.

“Our robust contingency plans are enabling us to meet our Universal Service Obligation and there is no backlog of mail. Royal Mail is fully committed to working with the CWU both nationally and locally. Every revision within the East of Scotland where no agreement has been found has been progressed through a nationally agreed framework.

“This is a series of formal meetings between us and the CWU where we actively seek to find solutions and there are no plans to move from this process.

“Where we have been unable to find agreement, we have worked with the CWU through the agreed framework and implementing without a formal agreement has been a last resort.”

The Tele tried to contact local officials of the CWU to discuss the situation today, but our attempts to communicate with the union proved fruitless. It is understood local representatives are currently at the union’s six-day conference in Bournemouth.

When I read this I breathed a sigh of relief. The way our office is going we will soon be in a similiar position to Dundee East & West, so it is nice to know that we will soon be meeting our delivery targets

Our office is not in a dispute, but im still delivering RECORDED parcels that have been there for up to a week.
There is often up to 3 yorks a day full of parcels, but they wont pay overtime for them to be delivered.
