A SOUTH Yorkshire postie who risked her life to rescue a pensioner from a blazing house has been recognised for her bravery at a ceremony in London.

Jamie Whittaker, aged 32, from Barnsley, spotted flames at one of the houses on her route and helped put out the fire and comfort the 92-year-old resident, along with a neighbour.

Once an ambulance had arrived she continued making her deliveries.

Doncaster postman Lewis Thorpe, 34, was also recognised at the Royal Mail's First Class People Awards for going above and beyond the call of duty.

He was nominated by the daughter of an elderly couple who described him as the 'postman of the century'.
She said: "The fact he can spend five minutes of his busy day making them smile makes him very special - what a credit to Royal Mail he is."

TV presenter Christine Bleakley presented the pair with a £500 cheque and framed certificate each.

She said: "Our postmen and women are a group of very remarkable people who contribute so much, with acts of kindness that make such a difference to the local communities where they live and work."

Having a slight laugh here. Did any other office, roundabout the time the "huddles'were introduced have to take'praise' from the Management? along with the daily traffic, failures etc,if anyone had received a compliment from customers or whatever,
they were publically thanked.I imagine it was introduced to boost morale--but the recipients found it cringeworthy!
needless to say they got nothing but good natured banter from the their mates,but the idea was sooned dropped.
