At my DO when I told people there was a new strike they all seemed happy that we were contnuing action but they had 2 points.

If your day off is Friday you have not yet suffered so perhaps they should have different days for the next strike.

Why aren't we striking for longer or in a different way (ie DOs on 1 day, MCs on another, etc)
We have a strike committee meeting on Monday, it will be interesting to hear others points of view. In the office at the moment many are saying as above "only one day"?

Here`s my two cents worth.

1. By next week we will have done two day`s of strikes.
2. Are the Company worried? maybe a little, are the Government worried? maybe a little.
3. Are the public worried? maybe a little. Do they care?
4. We will be short about £100. Are we worried? some are, some not! (Mr Leighton laughing at us)
5. Is our DOM worried , no he is not, thinks this sort of `One day action will go on through the Summer`.

RIGHT THEN

6.Next strike dates: 1st week in December all MC`s out one week!
7.Next strike dates: 2nd week in December all DO`s out one week!

8.Is the Company worried, Yes now they ARE.
9.Is the Public worried Yes they ARE.
10.Are we worried, maybe, but we are getting two weeks of strikes for `the price of One`
11. Mr Leighton, not laughing, VERY WORRIED!
12. DOM, worried, you bet!

13 .Result, everyone now worried, and trying to sort this mess OUT. (Mr Leighton not laughing at us! Now, at last he has a BLOODY BIG PROBLEM TO SORT OUT. ( Government now worried, no Christmas Post, oh no, Lost Votes)

When the French Farmers go on Strike, they do not say, oh excuse me Mr President do you mind if we strike, Bloody hell they man the Barricades, everyone knows about it!

Public Opinion? Put a big `add` in the Press, from the CWU, "We are sorry, WE ARE TRYING TO SAVE YOUR ROYAL MAIL SERVICE, BUT NO ONE IN SENIOR ROYAL MAIL MANAGEMENT OR GOVERNMENT IS LISTENING!!" Our members care, But because Royal Mail can not operate on a fair playing field, they will be paying with their jobs.

We, CWU NOW HAVE THE Moral High Ground?

any views?

I can't see too many people with children being happy to lose a week's wage and probably their Christmas bonus, and I imagine some tips in December. It just wont work, people will just say bugger that and go in.

Cutting your nose off to spite your face is not smart IA.

No . . . . think about it. . . . . if we do a week of strike action in 5 weeks time it will be no different to doing 1 day walkouts for the next 5 weeks all we have to do is put a little money aside for the next few weeks to keep us going on the strike week. Royal Mail get 5 weeks notice to actually talk to us, the public get the same to prepare and we get 2 weeks chaos followed by, probably, a few weeks of breaking off or booking it to keep the action and pain for Royal Mail going.

It's not as daft as it sounds and I think this and other ideas need to be considered if we intend to achieve anything, 1 day strikes alone just don't have the impact.

Chris , CWU don't have the moral high ground. The national press aren't interested and are clearly biased in RM's favour in this dispute (unlike some previous ones). The government aren't interested in the CWU view point and have told Postcomm not to fine RM for USO failure. How much more of a signal do you want that RM hold all of the power cards?

Who in the press/media/government/regulatory side supports CWU line?

Rather than asking for opinions on how to hit RM through more effective astrike action, wouldn't it be a better idea to consider what sort of savings suggestion the CWU could put forward? So far, all CWU have said is let's talk, forgetting to mention that 6 months of talking behind closed doors has produced no workable suggestions from the union.

It's very easy to slag th.e firm and say no, not so easy to come up with an alternative

OK how about secure the early start money in basic pay when moving to 6 o'clock starts so we don't loose 3.5% to get the 2.5%

take the proposed £800 bonus and put some of that in basic pay instead of a bonus we can't achieve

don't remove our right to have our union negotiate a yearly pay deal and replace it with a productivity related pay scheme

don't rework the duties in each office to allow for the new super machines several years before we are due to get them and therefore leaving us with not enough man hours to do the jobs

stop quoting we are 40% less productive than competition when it's actually that we have a different network and job than they do so there's no comparison to be had

that's just for starters and none of that costs RM any more than is on the table now . . . . so yes suggestions have been made, just not listened to.

I AGREE WITH BILLYPANTS. A WEEK OF STRIKING WILL HAPPEN IF THE RM TOSSERS DON'T SIT DOWN WITH THE UNION. THE CWU HAVE IDEAS ON HOW TO MOVE THE BUSINESS FORWARD AND HAVE SUBMITTED THIS TO RM. AT THE MOMENT THE TOP TABLE OF THE CWU ARE THE ONLY PEOPLE WHO KNOW THE DETAILS. THE PROBLEM IS RM WON'T BUDGE ON THEIR CORPORATE SUICIDE BUSINESS PLAN. WHAT I DO KNOW IS THE CWU KNOW THEIR WILL BE JOB LOSSES IN THE LONG RUN. BUT INSTEAD OF THE SLASH AND BURN £350M A YEAR CUTS OF RM, THE CWU WANT A GRADUAL DOWNTURN OF LABOUR. THERE ARE PLENTY OF PEOPLE IN THE BUSINESS WHO WOULD TAKE A VR. RM WANT TO CUT THE JOBS BEFORE THEY'VE PURCHASED ALL OF THE SEQUENCE MACHINES.
LIKE I SAID CORPORATE SUICIDE. NOT ENOUGH STAFF TO RUN THE BUSINESS.

Re moral high ground We don't have ANY GROUND at all I have not seen a single thing in any national newspaper from our union and taking in to account they don't pay any strike pay it's not like thay couldn't afford a full page add bearing in mind the millions they take in sub's every year. At the risk of repeating my self if any of this s**t goes through they wont have a membership to represent and i for one will be £12 a month better off.

As "billypants" says and these were some of my thoughts, at a strike one day per week per month gives us all about 28 Strikes! until December, if the current trend continues. That's a lot of money? yes like the many, I am prepared to give it up when faced with the alternative!
But my point was what return (profit on cost, not profit on return - that's retail speak, eh Mr Leighton) am I going to get for my/our money? If the two A`s don't give way, NOTHING? Well if I`m going to get nothing, then I would prefer to get more value for my money, and that is what a Two week Strike would give me?. It does not need to be December, it could be November, but its the principle of getting People to focus on the subject! which is required. Also don't forget to `factor`in the days you are going to need to defend against the `latter start times` if that's what your office degrees.

I agree with all you have said in particular "How much more of a signal do you want that RM hold all of the power cards?" OK.When you have a bad `hand` you have to play the cards you have, until the next deal. And the way we seem to be playing the `cards` is not returning us anything.

I have some, but would be interested in what you have?

I like what your saying Billypants.

Realistically 5 one day strikes is no different than a full week. Let's have at it & shake things up.

Whilst the union says its about the business plan rather than pay I don see how they can let CWU win whether its one day strikes or whole weeks. Whole weeks just mean we lose more money.

Re your comments on losing money. If this deal goes through you'll realy know what losing money is all about, and not just a days money here and there but week after week year on year. If for instance you had 10 years left after they took your early shift allowance away you'd lose almost £5000. How dose that stack up against your loss of strike pay.

VoR are you a new starter, because i cant understand what your argument is, if we lose this then you will lose more than a weeks pay you will lose money every week because in real terms its a pay cut your accepting, your pension is at risk, they also want you to do flexable hours, you will come to work to be told weve only got 4 hours work for you today, but you can do 12 hours tomorrow to make it up, who the f**k wants that, and you could even lose your job, doesnt the way RM are treating you make your blood boil, doesnt it get you f***ing wound up, because ive been doing this job for 25 years and im f***ing livid, bosses getting thousands of pounds of bonuses that theyve made off your back, and then telling us we cant afford a decent pay rise for you, and if anybodys thinking of a great VR then forget it, those are saved for f***ing management, myself personally i would go out and stay out for this, that would make them sit down and negotiate, and no i cant afford to, but the issues that are involed in this dispute are f***ing huge, and will affect every single part of your working life, its just a shame that grown adults cant see what is happening...UNITY IS STRENGTH.
