There is already a growing movement, which could remove the problem of getting suitable candidates to stand. Unfortunately, I couldn't attend last Saturday's meeting, to organise the CWU Rank and File Members, because the day had changed at short notice. But I have added my name to their List, and I suggest that you read about them, and consider doing the same.
I must admit that there is a single issue that I don't agree with them about. But that is a hell of a lot better than Hayes and Ward's attempt. Specifically: I don't agree with taking action if the vote doesn't go our way. In a Union, the majority decision of the Members must be supported. Even if we think that they were wrong to vote it in.
However. There is still time before the vote, to try to convince people to vote No. Not, because we tell them to. But, because most people haven't read the small print.
Every Member must vote in whichever way he/she feel is right. Not just for themselves, but for the whole Workforce, both current and future.
But we must do all we can, to point out where they are being decieved, so that they can make an informed decision. The best way to do this, is to refer them back to the original document. And steer them away from the propoganda.
There are some, who genuinely believe that this is a good deal. If they have come to that decision with their eyes open, and having read the whole deal. Then that is their decision, and it MUST be respected.
Personally, I think that the deal is a total sell out. Particularly for those who will join RM in the future. But there are too many people just jumping on one Bandwagon or the other.
Why hasn't the CWU distributed the WHOLE deal to everyone?
Not everyone is on the Internet. I have several Collegues who can't get this information, unless someone else gives it to them!
If we all speak to the waverers, and convince them to read the whole document, I think we will have no problem getting a No vote. Particularly, if they know that it is not only possible to reject the deal without neccessarily causing more Strikes (although obviously it is a possibility). But it is also possible to do something about the people at the top of the CWU. This is after all OUR UNION, and it's about time we took back control of it!
