Guys - your union is letting you all down big time and as the columnist says
'The dispute is seeing the fastest migration in business customers that Royal Mail has ever experienced and the longer the strike goes on, the worse the situation is becoming. Far from protecting job losses, postal workers are actually ensuring they happen.'
I totally agree with him and am transferring my business elsewhere – and you will be aware of many customers doing the same!

Your union is trying to stop essential changes to automation which will help stop the rot - to RM - of business going elsewhere; competitors already have such equipment. Strikes will most certainly NOT stop job losses, it will only increase the likelihood that they WILL happen. If the union was not playing it’s own games, and thus ignoring your best interests, they should be actively co-operating with RM to ensure all possible efficiencies; the country can see this – why can’t you and your ‘leaders’?
They appear not to have any sort of plan – everyone, especially customers, would be more impressed if you worked for no money on ‘strike’ days. It would actually show that you understand the issues and the implications on your own jobs of striking.

RM has 'lost' tens of thousands of managers in the last few years, all of whom left with good voluntary redundancy or early retirement packages - RM has never made anyone compulsorily redundant so job issues will only become an issue if the business is not turned around urgently; further strikes will help ensure that compulsory redundancies become inevitable.

It is unbelievable that the majority of union members cannot see this; there will always be a minority of trouble makers but they should be ignored in this situation.
You may not like the sound of this but it is the real world - it is high time you saw that and faced the reality!
You are only hurting yourselves and colleagues by striking.

Haha, the same crap is dished out any workers go on strike, "it will only harm you in the long run" it damages your business" " its not good for competition" etc etc. If we as workers were only interested in ensuring the business we work for was competitive then we'd all take wage cuts and agree to work longer hours for free.

Competition between businesses is just a means of attacking the condition of workers, of making each business more profitable at the expense of the employees. Time and time again we hear of how we're endangering our jobs or well being by taking action against bosses, and of course bosses detest us even more when we choose to stand on our own feet, but the reality is every day we go to work we're treated like s**t, we're treated like a means to an ends.

And with regards your comments as a "customer", dont you realise that most "customers" also tend to be workers? Talking of the effect on customers is like suggesting that all these people do is use services and buy stuff all day, as customers are also workers the strike is also in their interests. The attacks that are happening at Royal Mail are happening across the board to all sorts of customers/workers/parents/drivers etc etc. If we judged the effect of every strike from the view point of the isolated and disinterested "customer" then the results are bound to be negative, luckily we arent just "customers"!

To suggest that taking action against attacks on our well being isnt in our interests in the most patronising sack of s**t ive heard since i last picked up a copy of the Daily Mail.

Hurt is directly inflicted by ones self or group, our striking is done to force managers to wake up and realise why they are stressed out etc what 2 pr**s are trying to do to Royal mail?

:lfo This is like reading H******* sound s like one of thier mods , RM had a unheard of in business 17 layers of mgt, last year. As for the real world its L&C and thier senior mgt that live in Ivory Towers . RM do not go against thier own but as for making people compulsory redundant , they will use any underhand means to get people through the door as cheaply as possible. No I'm sorry , You get real , nobody likes or trusts L&C and thier senior mgt .

You seem to have watched one of Leightons videos with great interest, you read of all of his bullshit almost as if you were him yourself never

One word of advice, seein as youve been nice enough to give us some. Why dont you get of your arse and try delivering some post, see for yourself the pish we have to put up with from managers, carry heavy bags, get your arse bitten by rottweilers and their pets in some cases. Have the heavens open on you most days and get the s**t wages that we get.

Then and only then if you have the same views I may even take a second to listen to them, now if you are not prepared to try that then I suggest you stick your head up your personal letterbox and :cfo

Please present the articles/proof which you base this comment on.

As a Postman I am not aware that any automation has been put in anywhere or is even included within this pay offer, 40,000 redundancies. There are a few machines which are being tested in certain areas, however they are not working as well as RM say or wish they were. In plain and simple fact the Modernisation RM trumpet equate to pay cuts with more work such as

At present they pay us for D2Ds - they want to stop it paying for it but increase the amount we deliver - Modernisation/Automation ?

At present we are paid to deliver Election materials - RM will still charge for it being delivered but wont pass on that payment to post people, Modernisation/Automation ?

They want us start our duties later than at present this has 2 effects
1. We loose allowances (the real reason they want to bring this in)
2. You will get your mail 1 1/4 hours later than now (if your lucky) - Modernisation/Automation ?

They want us to cover sick and holiday absences without any extra time/pay to do it. In a call centre/Shop this would mean you would have to stay longer and serve more customers for no extra money. Modernisation/Automation ?

Another thing that RM have no control over is that we can only charge DSA users 13p per letter, but the minimum we can charge anyone else for our cheapest Bulk mailing product is roughly 18p - Modernisation/Automation ?

Also we cannot apply back to the business that we have lost until at least 2 years after the date of loosing the contract. Modernisation/Automation ?

Strikes will most certainly NOT stop job losses
We know that, if you had read previous comments on other threads before you posted your ill informed opinion you would have realised that we know job losses are on the way but we want it to be handled in a sympathetic and considerate way that does not leave those that are left in the business with bad working terms and conditions and being expected to do the impossible without the training or equipment to at least give it a good go.

The daily grind of having to argue your case with an intellectual pigmy of a line manager is physically and emotionally draining.
