Scanner Delivery machine?

Post by cj_1985 »

i saw a feature about these scanner machines that were being trialed in reading east DO to replace the recorder/special delivery sign cards...

i was wondering if anyone knew if there was any chance their use will be expanded.. as one of those would be easier than carrying 1 or 2 siging cards about... at the moment they keep getting soaked in my pocket and they only have space for what.. 8 or 9 items.. not really enough considering that every day there are more recorded/special delivery items to delivery and get a signature...

This type of thread has popped up a few times and it does look like their use will be expanded UK wide eventually. There was also a piece in the courier as well.

There are naturally a few concerns about the big brother aspect of them if they are GPS tagged, and also personal responsibility about charging, and damage. Also some queries as to whether it will affect some DOs who do not have to go back to the office. But I am sure all these points and others not thought of yet will be addressed before they are rolled out UK wide.

In this age of high tec. I would have thought that these scanners could have some sort of mobile facility, where the postie could send the data back to the office. Oh yes, and by the way, they can be programmed to read gas and elec. meters. So as we go to everyhouse at least once a week???????

I hope they can do that remotely as some of the houses I deliver to I would not enter without a Hazmat suit and full face mask. Image

I used to work for the ESI reading meters when I left the army 35 years ago. TBT is absolutely correct it's not just the horror stories of the interior but you know that dog that goes apeshit at the letter box? - well just imagine going in the house!

I've delivered to houses that can't even open the front door (piles of mail behind the door) and anyway there would have to be a risk assessment for each house and I can't see our wonderful managers wanting the extra work.

The scanners were removed from East Reading DO for walks a couple of months ago because they kept going wrong and they were very bulky only the drivers are using them at the moment dont know if they have resolved the software problems. From my point of view they were a complete pain in the bum.

The plan is for the scanners to come into use from August. Drivers will get them first and the cycles at a later date. All the vans are to be fitted with a cradle so that they can stay charged up in the van.
