Both Moya and Sue Whalley said this during the recent Ops & Mod managers conference and Moya was quite taken aback when a CWU rep stood up and said that as far as he was concerned it wasn't compulsory.
Brain, the issue is are they both aware of the complexities of implementing compulsory neighbour drop-off of parcel?

We are not like the competitors - we also have to deliver letters within our contracted time. It is quite simple - the only way that will work is to have a more flexible work force that is, time to deliver will become entirely flexible - are that can only be done with PDA monitoring with posties banking hours or owing hours depending on how long it takes to deliver the letters and then packet plus knocking on neighbours doors.

The other thing is that our standards are a lot higher than the competitors - should we drop the standards and QOS just to keep up with competitors or should we also be docked pay if we did not deliver parcels the first time?

It'll be a long time before we are on an equal footing with the likes of DPD, TNT etc, if ever. They are pretty much solely organised for parcel/packet delivery and we are a letter delivery organisation trying to be a parcel/packet delivery. In order to compete we have to reorganise, pretty much go back to they way we were organised in the past. Special duties specifically to deliver early/late and have more members on P & L in people carriers just concentrating on letters and D2D. I suspect TNT will find that letter delivery is not as lucrative as they first thought

I don't know. I just recall that Sue Whalley said that delivery to neighbour was "not optional" in her presentation during the morning which surprised me slightly. Moya repeated it during her lunchtime speech but during the questions afterwards one of the reps challenged it. Moya et all seemed a bit taken aback and Dave Ward said nothing.

To be honest the whole conference smelt of panic to me. Panic that Ofcom will not intervene on direct delivery until we are "efficient", panic that Amazon is going it's own way with delivery, panic that competitors like Hermes and Yodel seem to be getting their act together.
