At the end of the day, we don't know what is going to happen with drivers/non drivers .. we are one of the pilot offices and had a meeting this week with local/area manager/s - they don't know when the trial is to start - they doubt it will be February - they don't know the attendance hours, they don't know the shift patterns, they're not sure how it will work, they don't know anything regarding vr, in short, it's wait and see ....
Who is making these decisions then? You would think there would be communications from higher up to local and area management FFS. Either that or... checks notes management are lying
There can’t be changes to shift patterns or attendance times: part of the pilot us that they have to work with the staff they have and the system they have.
Think more likely they'll make what changes they think are needed in MCs, RDCs and DOs to make it work
They can’t. The pilot has to run it’s course with what they have and in so doing, it will highlight changes which need to be made after the pilot if it is a success.

This is RM, it's already been proven to be a success on a spreadsheet on a ZX81.

Oddly enough some of these posties actually have driving licences and drive to work in their cars but will not drive a RM van!
Some of us weren't so foolish as to drive a private car on delivery before P&L.

There will need to be a real solution to this issue....and not one that comes from either RM or CWU. If non drivers are guaranteed Mon-Fri duties then I along with 90% of the legacy pre 2010 members will just politely decline to bring their drivers license in for its annual 6 months check I will have to be accommodated along with all the others who either can't/won't drive for RM. They can't sack us/pay us all off so a solution will be found.

If you're pre 2010 you should have enough seniority to pick a Mon to Fri.

Even if the alternative was every second Saturday off, working one day less every 2 weeks and having an extra long weekend of 4 days off in a row every second week?

Most legacy drivers in my office think that would be a good compromise

Theres always the one or two who would sooner see all non drivers made redundant than feel someone has something better than them though but on the whole most think the 9 day fortnight deal would be good

I, as a non driver, would actually prefer the 4 days off in a row every 2 weeks if I had the option - which I wont.
If you tolerate this, then your paid break will be next

I honestly don’t think they’ve given these possible issues any great amount of thought whatsoever. I think they’ve gone for the straightforward, ‘well obviously non-drivers wouldn’t work on a Saturday’, and then not thought through what that would really mean.

Non driving staff HAVE to be accommodated in any new system though, and as soon as they mention a USO reform that includes 1C letters and parcels only on a Saturday, it's pretty obvious it means non driving staff will, for now, be given duties that mean every Saturday off.
Personally, I don't think it will be as easy as you think to stop driving for the company, especially if they offer a fair compromise which gives far more time off than you get just now.

Refusing to drive, after previously driving, will probably lead to conduct unless you can show some valid reasons for abruptly refusing to fulfill a major requirement of your role.

That's what I thought, say your office can only accommodate 4 non drivers and you've got 4, what happens then, perhaps they can find you an office or mail centre with a non driving duty but it could be an extremely long commute.

Someone told the manager in our office they didn't want to do driving in our office anymore and he was told he had no choice as r.mail had paid to have him driver trained...not sure if it was manager bullshit but it worked the geezer is still a driver.

Most MCs are probably located where there's little if any public transport. Generally many MCs cover a much wider geographical area these days. I can't sere them being able to find a duty in the MCs when every shift had supernumerary staff during the last realignment. We took on a few new staff during the early part of the Covid but since then at least that many have left the business

I think refusing to drive is the same as putting a target on your back. Being told they are considering you for VR isn’t a compliment 😱, they are telling you that you’ve entertained them enough.

There are a minority of non-drivers in each office and they need to be protected from being forced out of a job, just because a lazy manager can’t think of duty hours for them or can’t see them doing anything in the new version of RM. They may or may not have every Saturday off, but they are hardly in a comfortable position.

They might be made supernumerary and moved to another office. Back when we had a realignment, before they got found other duties within the MC the supernumerary were going to be moved out to various DOs. they wouldn't have had any say or choice in the matter. It would have been they moved or they had no job.
