You can't blame RM for wanting more flexibility and resourcing to workload - the vast vast majority of people working until time every day on the same duty are taking the mick on some days, the workload differs so much.

I'm not saying I want a fully flexible week btw, I can't do it anyway as I have childcare (plus I don't want to!). But, finishing early one day then expecting to be paid for finishing the same time over another is ridiculous from a business point of view.

Yes I know the agreement is work all your paid hours each day, but if you get job&knock some days in exchange for a bit of flexibility when needed then it benefits everyone. Obviously you need managers that don't take advantage and take the p*ss though, luckily ours don't. Tell them you can't work over any day and you don't, simple as that.
Agree with a lot of that, up to the point where a full timer is asked to lapse the mech on my current round from 6.30 before I arrive at 7 and makes out he's doing me a favour by cutting down my working day by 30 mins, he's effectively picking my pocket on request. One man's flexibility can be another mans wage cut.

Lapsing your mech? What exactly does that mean? As I'd it's what I think then someone is possibly going to get in big trouble for it

I think what he's getting at is: If there's not enough indoor work to keep the (predominately) Full Timers busy in the early part of the mornings they will get them to throw off the Mech on Duties which are being Prepted/Delivered by (predominately) Part Timers. :hmmmm

This happens quite a bit in my DO and what Redneck's saying is: They're taking work/money out of his pocket because he has less work to do by the time his duty starts. From a manager's point of view it may appear a good idea. However you often find he may be saving an hour (which that PTer would claim) but he ends up paying an additional hours OT to the Full Timer (because he's him allowed to come in early to prep IPS) Ideally the practise of allowing "The Chosen Few" to turn up early and accrue, what we all call "Special Over Time", shouldn't be allowed to happen. But it does! :no no

I've been trying trying to get a weekly list of overtime displayed publicly in the DO for ages, but there's too many vested interests to allow that to happen. :cuppa

Nice answer, are you the type that drags your feet around no matter how light the mail is, taking the same time to compete a 50-60% call rate on a Tuesday as you do on a 90% Wednesday? RM aren't stupid, having people sitting around to their time with no work is ridiculous and a waste.

Like it or not if you want a job in a few years this is the way it's going to be. The deadwood is either going to have to do something or leave.
I often work till my time on a Tuesday - We have a shorter working day Mon & Tue and the lighter call rate on Tues means I have time to take all my packets, tracked and lapsing. Also take slightly more D2D on a Tuesday to help reduce the workload Wed-Sat. It's not dragging my feet - it's managing my workload.

And you'll find it's the people you term "Deadwood" who have done more to keep people in jobs and cling onto workers rights than any amount of "flyers". Funny thing is that 99% of the time it's the deadwood who actually have a spine and stand up for their, and their colleagues, rights in the face of bullying know-nothing managers.

We had this years ago what they will do is take a part time walk or an easy full time one and lapse it and when it can be done they will come for more and it never stops.

I believe that's the plan K. :hmmmm It's the Death of a Thousand Cuts! It's not too difficult, it's just an extra 10 minutes or so, people end up lapsing just to avoid an argument every morning. Next thing you know they're lapsing another duty ... and that's another job gone! :no no

Regardless of the situation I think we should be making our feelings known, AND BOOK EVERY 15 MINUTES AS LAPSING...make sure the buggers know there's not "Spare" time in the Office! Or we're going to Sleep Walk into a situation and then it's too late to back track!! :arrrghhh

They don't let you book OT for lapsing just intimidate you into doing it because of all the runners can do it why cannot you?

Do the lapsing but get back 10/15 minutes late. Whether they allow you to book it or not, you have still shown it cant be done in the time and you dont work for free. No more lapsing.

Obviously most Offices are different (although perhaps they shouldn't be), but IF he's paying you I don't think ours worries about what's written down on the sheet. Generally we write "Protracted Delivery" but will often try and High Light a point by writing "Lapsing" instead. It's normally only the same old faces that claim, I suppose we're the "Lazy Bastards" that can't be bothered to get a move on! :whistle

Similar situation for when you get hammered on IPS and/or your own frame, very few OPGs at my depot will put any of their overtime claim down against indoor work, it is always extended delivery! :arrrghhh

DSMs and above need to be made aware of when depots are being given crazy indoor workloads, that won't happen enough if you make them think it is always just an outdoor workload issue.

If your 318 says you should be out by 1015 having taken indoor meal relief, but you actually leave at 1030 and you go 30mins past your contract time, 15mins o/t is indoor and 15mins is outdoor.

Working paid hours !!! dont make me laugh.

In my DO the average delivery duty makes at least 4 hrs a week in finishing early.
Some duties can make as much as 4 hours every Saturday and most Tuesdays as well.
Out of around 60 staff only about 7 of us take a meal relief.

I work in the RLE and also take out a 2 hr daily delivery, before getting back to take my meal relief and then book in items into the callers, up till my end time.

On a regular basis i see staff getting back from delivery and going home, before i am even bagged up for my delivery.

We have people getting O/T every day for covering sickness, even though with the added 2nd delivery they are often done within their duty time.
How can OT be offered with most of the office finishing early every day?

How can they justify the simple fact that by not taking a meal relief and making just 4 hrs a week(often much more, 4hrs is an average) means most staff in my office work nearly 2 months less than me a year for the same money???

Yeah, cos i just sit on my arse for the rest of my shift !!!

I've done the RLE for about 5 years. Always worked start to finish of my duty time - always had stuff to do.
Since revision some 14 months ago i've also had to find the time to squeeze in the 2hr delivery.
I don't stop from start to finish, except for my meal relief.
Instead of me assisting with booking items into the callers after my delivery, the callers duty now has to do it as well as serving at the same time. huge elements of my duty are now either ignored oronly half done on a daily basis - nothing too major, just the security of my office (door left ajar all day now - anyone comes in and out) vehicle keys taken but never signed out, stuff like that.

Yeah i'm so lucky !! :arrrghhh

That is a shocking statement Mezza  With over 2000 DOs there's bound to be a few "Rogue Duties" but God Knows how they've managed to get away with that for so long?

Perhaps you can console yourself with the fact that when extra deliveries are added, these people will have the time to do them. Unless of course they're some of the "Chosen Few"! :d'oh!

What I was pointing out to you is that completing a 4-6 hour delivery walk is far more taxing on the body than dealing with paper work. That is not to belittle what you are doing as no doubt you do work all of your hours.

Depends how you look at it though Lincox.

Having done my fair share of deliveries in nearly 15 years with RM i appreciate how knackering a 4-6 hour delivery can be.
I should point out the only reason i took the RLE position was following a lengthy period of abscence due to FOOT PROBLEM - the old PF, i was then threatened with a move to the mail centre to keep me from having to go out on delivery - ironically as stated i am now sent out for 2 hrs every day.

However in my office even those that take 4 hrs to complete are getting home before me and therefore resting long before i can, we don't have many deliveries that take much more than 4.30 hrs.

I can honestly say that i sit down for about 15 minutes during my duty each day......plus of course the 40mins whilst on my enforced meal relief.
