Re: TO JOIN THE CWU OR NOT TO JOIN
Everyone should join the CWU if they are a postie, you might never need them but on the other hand you might and if you are not a member then the managers can do their worst and you wont be able to do anything about it on our own.

Re: TO JOIN THE CWU OR NOT TO JOIN
As others have said the CWU have not been all that good nationally in most recent times but locally i think its a must and should be viewed as an insurance policy for when things go wrong and you find yourself on the wrong side of Royal Mail.
This current thread is a fair example :

Re: TO JOIN THE CWU OR NOT TO JOIN
JOIN NOW, there are many benefits when it comes to legal representation as the CWU have their own solicitors if indeed you were involved in an accident or just wanted free advice on anything legal.hannie2002 wrote:im a new starter just waiting on start date but im wondering is it worth the money off your wages to join the cwu or is it not worth it.
do they help you in anyway or do they take a memership fee to do naff all would like to hear your comments please.

Re: TO JOIN THE CWU OR NOT TO JOIN
Please don't delay JOIN..... This comes from someone who has been an active trade unionist all my working life but also had an employment and attendance record second to none. After the last national agreement i tore my card up in disgust and withdrew from the union on principal, thinking the only reason to be in the union is if you do something wrong, and i have kept my nose clean for 30 odd years so i'll be okay. Wrong!!!! we can all slip up in the quest to get the job done. Since then i have been subjected to horrendous bullying (oh sorry it's not called that when managers do it) and set up by management..... I have since swollowed my pride and rejoined (though i have not asked for retrospective representation i made my bed and i'll lie in it) and it's good to feel help will be there when i need it the next time. The union is far from perfect, even the times dictate that no trade union will enjoy past powers, but there are still a lot of good people in it and it's kinda strange in our office only two people have faced severe disciplinary action both who withdrew from the union when the gaffers Toadies get away with much worse offences without a hint of discipline..... You can work your socks off in this industry but if some of the managers take a disliking to you or you upset them they will target you and the support of the union and it's members will be invaluable

or have an accident
or get bitten by a dog
or never get given a Saturday off
or need time off for dependants
or get grief from a colleague
or make a mistake
No. You are probably right. As long as he just does his job properly he won't need to know the correct procedure for any of these eventualities or need anyone to help him out.
The societies of consumption and squandering of material resources are incompatible with the idea of economic growth and a clean planet.

I can see his logic, you only need to be wearing your seatbelt when you actually have an accident.clashcityrocker wrote: No. You are probably right. As long as he just does his job properly he won't need to know the correct procedure for any of these eventualities or need anyone to help him out.
As long as he can see at least a week into the future he'll be fine.
good times, bad times you know I've had my share

Yep all true enough
However get sick for a few days in your first 6 months and then see how you make out without a rep backing you up.

Re: TO JOIN THE CWU OR NOT TO JOIN
Ironic, most join or stay not because of the union itself, but because of Royal Mail.
Royal Mail is the best recruiter for the union, funny as f**k.

It's good to get these types of threads, the ridiculous my manager said bollox, so we can reassure ourselves that while the world is falling apart, Royal Mail managers are still being the low-life C***S they have always been.

The daily grind of having to argue your case with an intellectual pigmy of a line manager is physically and emotionally draining.

Re: TO JOIN THE CWU OR NOT TO JOIN
I think it is a bit sad myself when we can only recruit for what they as future members can get out of it rather than what "WE" can achieve together, but for myself i still hope those future members realise it is US not I that really makes any Union instead of being cynical about the whole thing.POSTMAN wrote:Ironic, most join or stay not because of the union itself, but because of Royal Mail.

Re: TO JOIN THE CWU OR NOT TO JOIN
Yup - I agree. Join the CWU - its a no-brainer for £1.80 per week. Quick and simple to join - fee taken out of pay-packet automatically.
From what I have heard here, RM will not help or support you in some situations where you will need it. Furthermore, in some branches there seems to be abuse and bullying to a worrying degree and it could be vital to be able to call on a rep to be a witness and who know the rules. We are in a job where a mistake or rash action could result, not just in dismissal, but in criminal charges. Important to have someone with access to (expensive) legal advice and support on your side.
Personally I think every worker should join a union for the solidarity, and that if you join you should take the rough with the smooth and always obey strike action that has been voted in - even if you do not agree yourself
Patt :]

Re: TO JOIN THE CWU OR NOT TO JOIN
Join the CWU. No ifs, no buts, just do it.
I've got Asperger Syndrome, and despite what RM write in the Courier, managers (especially my lino) will bully, lie and hassle all the more. My reps are fantastic, and have helped me so many times. In fact, I think my rep cares far more about me than my lino.
A bloke in our office got sacked for signing for a special on his pda, the SD then went missing. Our rep said that he could have got him off, but he wasn't in the union and refused to join even when in trouble.
With RM turning up the heat on us posties, and trying to blame us for the spectacular failure of park and loop revisions, we need to support the CWU more than ever before.
