How many times have you bumped into the public though and they say, "I used to be a postie, wonderful job, I know how you guys work. Two bags of mail stopping to chat and have a cup of tea finished by 11 and home in time for my part time afternoon job etc etc...." When was that 1960?

The public, and ex-posties, have no idea how this job has changed for the worst. I often take a few minutes to talk to a customer if they complain, "You're much later today or I haven't had any mail for a few days." They're really quite shocked when you tell them about lapsing, summertime savings & cutting off. RM are doing a good job of convincing the public we're the ones causing the problems. I suggested to our local rep that CWU organise a D2D to explain to customers. "We have the cabability to deliver them!" He said RM wouldn't let us deliver them. I'm sure we could find some way around that!

Cheers :wave

That's been the problem with the Union HQ, always keen to take our money but not to enthusiastic to spend it publicising why we are taking strike action, It's the same old story with the public always assuming we're after more money.
All we seem to get is some Union bloke on the TV saying this is about job losses and Royal Mail's refusal to negotiate with the Union, why don't they challenge :mfo :cfo to explain what these job losses mean to the public tell them about cut offs, Lapsing, uncompleted deliveries, Posties out delivering 8pm at the moment and with these job cuts things will only get worse.
From what I understand Royal Mail can't refuse to do door to door, it's all part of the Public Service they are supposed to provide.
As a workforce we are unable to deliver these items in Post Office time or even in our own time if we are wearing the uniform.

Hi all first post here. I have been a posty for 22 years. First bag I had was the brown roll up sack and the grey uniform.

Just lately I have been moaning a lot about lapsing etc until another old fellow took me to one side and told me the good old days are over, you have to look out for your self now.

At first I was shocked but after thinking about it I realised I didn’t know most of the names of the new guys, most start at 9am and keep themselves to themselves.

The job has changed, I was the only one not doing lapsing and doing the job properly. Even the union guy was doing lapsing.

So from next week ill shut up, do my lapsing, keep my head down and my gob shut as that is the way it is in my office now.

I’m fed up of being focused on by managers and the Dom. This is it, its what the job is and I’m no longer going to fight against it.

The union is dead, it just needs to realise it, we have lost.

Sorry to sound so negative but it’s the honest truth.

"With respect" i have seen many people of all backgrounds come & go through our office showing that there ARE jobs that people in the dole queue can't do at RM especially the delivery side :arrrghhh . I agree that it isnt the most difficult of jobs but some folk just cant seem to get their heads round it.

A little common sense goes a long way & plenty of the people i have seen struggle are lacking just that (maybe you were one of them :d'oh!

You are fu**ing spot on mate. It amazes me that the ones moaning about the lapsing but still do it are the ones who still come in early, prep d2d's in own time, dont take breaks and fly round. The reason we are in the mess we are is due to ourselves. When only a small majority of an office do the job properly what chance have we got? We should all be sticking together but unfortunately this will never happen again. My attitude now is i work 8 hours a day then go home. What they aske me to do i do it unless it can make me go over my time then i say no. Once i leave office i dont once think about the shitty job till i go back the following day.

We have full timers supposed to start at 6am coming in at 5.30am or earlier

Part timers supposed to come in at 7.20 coming in at 6am throwing off their walk and then helping out on ips when there not supposed to.

Private cars being used.

We even have guys bagged up, going out and doing a third of there walks before the missorts are in.

Its pointless trying to do the job properly when we are our own worst enemy.

I am afraid from his posts "Locker Dave" appears to be pre-SDD so will not be aware of the current situation or feeling off the grass roots. I also have a feeling he may rely on us not going on strike although this does not negate his right to hold a view over the strikes, it would, if I was correct in my assumption certainly colour his opinion.

Borders - agree with you entirely in what you say. I have the same view point when it comes to further education. The government seems to want all school leavers to go on to college and university and some see you as a failure if you don'. However, all that does it make the dole queue more educated and the work force over qualified. I have nothing against individuals going on to further education if they want, but I don't agree that you are a failure if you don't. I think they should bring back vocational training and qualifications which seems to have vanished from the UK education system.

Huxon - you posted as I was typing. At my place about 10 out of 300 started doing the job properly and now its probably half and growing. Even if only 1 person leads the way and the others see the benefits then more will join.

The trouble is I have had managers patrolling me while I’m out on delivery and showing me a clipboard and telling me so and so finished at ten to twelve, next was ten past twelve etc.

I am constantly harassed by management and this is the worst part, have had other postmen say we are doing the lapsing why should you get away with not doing it.

So long story short they have won, from this week ill be doing the lapsing and keeping my gob shut.

surely there is an average speed on delivery agreed by both royal mail and union. as long as you are delivering to an agreed rate then it is totally irrelevant if someone else can do it faster

Isn't that the unachievable average of 4MPH?
Or have they changed it to a more achievable speed?

Nonsense....never give up the fight. It because people in your office have this attitude that you have chosen to go the same way.

once again im glad our managers are ok and dont harrass us as they dont think absorbtion will work in the latter part of the week as we started absorbing 2 duties today (its going to rise to 4 at some point)...stated IPS at 6.30 was all done by 7.15.....walk was prepped by 8.00.....meal relief till 8.40.....managers had prepped the 2 absorbed walks and said as long as we were back by 9.15 we could go and deliver some of our own walk or the part we have to absorb (roughly 20 delivery points each)
most of the office went and did the absorbtion..some did there own walks.....i have to agree with them about traffic being down in our office at the moment as i was finished by 12.30 and im lucky i live on my walk so no need to go back to the office with P739 items as my driver takes them back for me
be a different proposition after the summer period though when the part timers come in and we have to prep there walks so in the mean time i think we are all going to take advantage while we can

I'm also in the position of being the only one in my office who doesn't do lapsing and continues to 'do the job properly' and I am constantly being attacked over my work rate but I can always come onto this site and get a boost to my self confidence which in turn, helps me continue to fight.

That and the dubious web sites that I visit   :nervous

Hi ! One of the problems to me seems to be,Obviously all offices are different and every person is an individual. The royal mail as a hole is changing or should i say trying to change. The big picture with issues such as privatization , absorption . Full time jobs being changed to part time jobs, Royal mail backing out of agreement's ETC. Will affect all offices ! But people deal with things in different ways. For example i hate to say it but i doubt my office will be striking. The atmosphere in my office hasn't really changed. No ones really happy but that's always been the case. Its a Given our managers are cocks but every one knows that. Theirs no real surprise when they do or say something ridiculous we all now their agendas and most people just seems to get on with it. People do challenge them and as a whole those people are normally left to do their own thing. Those sort of people are in short supply in my office. I just hope the majority of offices aren't like mine.

I no after reading allot of the posts on the site allot of the issues i can relate to. But some of the issues and things going on kind of make me think maybe my office isn't that bad. The bottom line seems to be allot of people are happy to make do and just want an easy life. Don't get me wrong if our office do ballot for a strike i wont be going anywhere near my office on strike days. Even though I'm not in the union I believe in what every ones fighting for. I just hope in a couple of months when the dust settles. The workers get what they've been fighting for. Keep up the fight.!!! :Applause :Applause
