i think youll be okay especially at this time of year, the volume of parcels through roof, dont worry about the special trust me no one wants to do the job they wont want to lose a good postman, bound to be hundreds of errors with the volumes now

You prioritised the special by keeping it seperate ( although they should be kept completely seperate from your general mail - you messed up a bit here)
You tried your best to rectify your mistake, then you immediately owned up to it.
You didn't, from what you've said, seriously disregard the security of mail procedure or anything else.
Mistakes happen, occasionaly even with specials. You'll be fine.

There's always the chance that it was mis-delivered or dropped and someone has found it and posted it through the customers door.
