A LAZY Blackpool postman hoarded thousands of letters in his garage because he said he was too tired to complete his round.
Adam Willis, 23, stacked up so much undelivered post he was forced to use his council wheelie bin to store it.
When Royal Mail investigators visited his home in Ashfield Road, Bispham, in the run up to last Christmas they found 6,469 items of undelivered mail.
Blackpool magistrates were told Willis blamed the sheer weight of his mail sacks for making his legs give way and said he kept getting wet because he had no jacket.
Willis would sometimes only spend 30 minutes on his round before giving up and going home to hide the mail.
It was only when members of the public complained that an investigation began.
When interviewed, Willis told investigators: "I was overwhelmed on that round... my legs were giving way and I got soaked because I had no coat."
District Judge Peter Ward was unimpressed and told Willis: "This is a grave breach of trust. It's total nonsense to say you could not do the walking involved.
"If you could not do the job you should have given it up."
Willis admitted delaying 6,469 items of mail between November 7 and December 7 last year.
He also admitted opening six letters or parcels and removing DVDs and a CD which were found at his home.
Willis, who worked out of Royal Mail's Cleveleys Delivery Office, has now been sacked.
He was sentenced to 180 days jail, suspended for two years, ordered to do 200 hours unpaid work for the community and pay £1,262 costs.
Leisa Splaine, defending, said being a postman had been her client's "dream job".
"Items were stockpiled in his garage and his wheelie bin, but he says he would not have allowed the refuse men to take the contents of the bin away."
Willis did eventually volunteer to deliver the post, but bosses turned his offer down.
A Royal Mail spokesman said: "All delayed mail in this case has now been delivered."
