Postal workers bag award

A Royal Mail manager and four postwomen who got behind the wheel of a milk float, crane and other unusual vehicles to raise cash for charity have driven home with a top award.

Manager Sandra Witts, and postwomen Claire Park, Harjinder Saran, Jane Edginton and Anne Egan from Swindon Mail Centre clinched the honour in Royal Mail's 1st Class People Awards and now go on to the national finals with the chance to win £1,000.

The fabulous five, who call themselves the Power of Sisters Team (POST), were chosen as the South West winners in the fundraising category which recognises people who go that extra mile to raise cash for good causes.

The women, who took part in The Ladies Driving Challenge, will join regional winners from across the UK at a London award ceremony on March 31, where they will receive £500 and a certificate from Royal Mail Chief Executive Adam Crozier.

The women were nominated by staff at Prospect Hospice in Swindon after a driving event at RAF Lyneham raised £1,000 for the centre which looks after terminally-ill patients.

Sandra Witts, who organised the challenge where teams from several companies competed against each other by driving unusual vehicles around a circuit, said they were over the moon to win the award.

"We are really taken aback to have won the award and will be making this driving challenge a regular event. We are also planning a sponsored midnight walk in aid of the hospice."

The driving event saw teams complete driving challenges in a Royal Mail articulated lorry, a double decker bus, a crane, a roadsweeper, a milk float and an off road vehicle.
