With regard to your correspondent, Alan Freeman of UKIP and his comments regarding Royal Mail and the postal service.
Mr Freeman is correct in everything that he says about the postal service and the harsh restrictions imposed upon Royal Mail over the past few years.
I would elaborate by saying that as a result of an ECC directive some years ago, the Labour Government set up a postal regulator, called postcomm which has a remit to force competition into the postal service by hook or by crook.
In doing so they have allowed private companies such as TNT to snatch away Royal Mail's lucrative business contracts which in themselves underpin the nation of a "universal" postal service.
It is a well known fact that stamped mail or "social mail" as it is known is a money loser nowadays, but postcomm knows this but seems to care little about the problems which it is causing Royal Mail.
When I complained to postcomm about the unfair competition imposed upon Royal Mail, they were completely unrepentant and said that Royal Mail had "economies of scale".
I would clarify this statement by saying that this means that Royal Mail will have to cut many jobs because they will lose business to private postal companies who have no intention of delivery to "difficult areas" or "out of the way places" but would leave these to Royal Mail.
As Mr Freeman so correctly says private companies will and are indeed cherry picking the most profitable parts of the postal service.
Since other countries within the ECC have still to comply with postal regulations regarding competition it beggars belief that the Labour Government were the very first (or almost) to liberalise postal services.
Once again we have a sorry tale of British Governments selling out its people whilst the rest of Europe looks on laughing at us.
Both Tory and Labour Governments have sold out British manufacturing and the Labour Government are doing the same with our once great postal service.
