Dead letter drop

Missing mail turned up in a graveyard after a postman's bag and bike were stolen.

Claire Raines and daughter Sky with the recovered parcelResidents at Rooksmead, Brickhill, Bedford, received letters from the Royal Mail last Saturday telling them post had gone missing.

The postie's bike and bag were grabbed off the street as he delivered a package on Wednesday.

Residents thought their mail had been lost for good.

But last Sunday afternoon a Good Samaritan knocked on the door of Claire Raines to tell her he had discovered a parcel bearing her name among various items dumped in Foster Hill Road cemetery.

Mrs Raines said: "He was with his wife and children but he was happy to draw me a map showing where he had found my package and he had his arms full of other items which he delivered along the street.

"The items in my parcel would have been of no use to the thieves.

"They were just items I had bought off ebay but I was very glad to have them back and I can't thank this man enough.

"I didn't think to ask his name so I'd like to thank him through the newspaper and his family who waited patiently while he delivered all the bits and pieces he had retrieved."

A police spokesman said: "We were called out at about 10.40am by the postman who said his bag and bicycle had been taken while he was delivering a few doors up. Inquiries into the theft are ongoing."

A Royal Mail spokesman said: "We are aware of the theft, which has been reported to the police, but did not know about any mail being found. We would urge anyone with information to get in touch with the police."
