Single vans to stop?

Post by matthew68 »

So according to our manager single vans aren’t working as walks our too far from office, he now says that we will probably revert back to shared vans next week as it’s not practical! Also people are using there cars to take parcels and mail out which I thought wasn’t allowed, so he reckons that we will start sharing vans as it’s very low risk anyway, is this official then as we have no union rep and I’m not happy with this at all

I don`t think he has the power to force people to share a van, the government said we are still in lockdown for 3 more weeks and even when the lockdown will be over, there will be a transition period for sure.

What your union rep says? Contact your area rep if necessary.

Get on to you area rep right away as Royal Mail can’t go against government guidelines.

If they still try to then you have every right to use section 44 of the health and safety act , often misused and misunderstood but would absolutely apply in this instance.

I totally agree with Pidleypoo (something i never thought i'd write ha ha)
This is the law and your employer (RM) CAN NOT force you into an unsafe condition or situation.
I know members feel open to abuse if they do not have reps, but you have the law on your side and you can stand up for yourselves.

Also if you have no H&S or Union rep why do you not stand for one of the positions?

44
Health and safety cases.
(1)An employee has the right not to be subjected to any detriment by any act, or any deliberate failure to act, by his employer done on the ground that—
(a)having been designated by the employer to carry out activities in connection with preventing or reducing risks to health and safety at work, the employee carried out (or proposed to carry out) any such activities,
(b)being a representative of workers on matters of health and safety at work or member of a safety committee—
(i)in accordance with arrangements established under or by virtue of any enactment, or
(ii)by reason of being acknowledged as such by the employer, the employee performed (or proposed to perform) any functions as such a representative or a member of such a committee,

Is mail failing and people are standing about with nothing to do as there is no way to transport people to start of delivery?
What kind of distances are we talking about (roughly)?

Not one item of mail should be entering a car.
Currently people who van share use there car to follow the van around then do loops and get back in car also some guys use hct but refuse to walk 2-3 miles to start of delivery so Dom drops them off in transit van which is obviously sharing van, I also see guys loading own cars with parcels and have told manager who said he will stop it but it’s still going on. We have no rep and I have contacted them about it and they have been in but as soon as they go he reverts back to dropping people off it’s just not happening properly and no one else seems bothered about it apart from me and a couple of others who don’t say anything to him which is really worrying

some insurers are adding business insurance for free to allow you to follow the van around, and you can claim mileage too, that's if you wish to, also permission to use houses for bag-drops like before, and our d/o isn't bothered if done early too, but mail in your own car is an absolute no, you maybe insured on an accident but if the mail got stolen or damaged then it's probably a p45
btw i've drove by some posties with mail in their cars, obviously they see the 30 mins early dart :arrrghhh
