Date: 08 February 2008

Green freight transport services which reduce congestion and have a smaller carbon footprint have been backed by the European commission.

The commission said it was in support of private freight transport services as it requests proposals to improve the freight system by protecting the environment.

This week the commission has published its second call for proposals under the Marco Polo II programme, which is aimed at making European roads safer and cleaner.

The proposals must involve a strategy which includes cutting traffic on roads across the continent and making the freight transport system more environmentally-friendly.

Haulage companies across the European Union are being urged to submit their proposals for the programme and suggest ways to make freight greener.

Efforts are already being made in London to reduce the amount of pollution caused by large trucks and lorries.

This week saw the introduction of the Low Emission Zone which targets thousands of haulage operators who are fined £200 if their trucks exceed the EU limits. "

I have an idea.....

Perhaps RM should use trains....

Oh .... RM already consigned that idea to the bin several years ago.

Maybe they could use the underground system in London, oh wait they used to but they dropped it (how many blind mice do we need running RM?)
