Queen rejection: How monarch REFUSED request - Royal Mail shocked
Queen Elizabeth II stopped the Royal Mail from "updating her image" on their stamps in the 1980s, according to royal historian and commentator Robert Lacey. Mr Lacey said there was a difference in age between the image of the Queen used on coins and stamps. While on Sky News promoting his book, he discussed the incident, which is referred to in The Crown.
He said: “As you have seen there is a lovely opening scene where you see her looking at the new stamps.
“And then she says I have become a bit of an old bat.
“Something I reveal in the book is that we have those stamps to this day.
“Those first-class stamps with that lovely silhouette.

“If you look at the coins in your pocket you will see that the Queen looks older on coins than she does on stamps.
“That is because in the 1980s, the post office and the Royal Mail went back to the Queen and said 'we think it is time to update your image'.
“The Queen agreed to the coins but no to the stamps, she added she wanted to stay looking 40.”
The Crown shot to popularity with viewers hooked on the drama, iconic moments and controversies surrounding the royal family.

Mr Lacey also reflected on the confusion from viewers on the truthfulness of the Crown and whether all events actually happened.
He said: “If people think they are watching a documentary they are going to make that mistake.
"I think people should start out with the realisation that they are watching a wonderful drama.”
“For example in season 3, without giving anything away, there is a recreation of the famous royal family film documentary.
