For the first time in a single week, more than 10 million parcels have been sorted on our parcel sort machines (PSMs).
That isn’t the only automation milestone achieved this weekend, as it pushed the combined total sorted on all PSMs to more than half a billion since our first site went live in December 2016.
That site was Swindon Mail Centre, while Glasgow Mail Centre is the most recent in operation and, by the end of this year, Home Counties North Mail Centre will become the first to start using a second PSM.
As part of our ‘turnaround and grow’ plan we’re on a journey to automate more than 80% of our parcels by 2023/24. That’s a marked increase from 12% in 2018-19.
‘I’m really delighted,’ said process and collections director, Wayne Jay. ‘It’s fantastic news to achieve those two milestones. Everyone involved should be really pleased – from procurement to design, to project colleagues and the operational teams. It’s a real achievement and people should be proud.’

RMtv returned to Swindon, our initial trial site, to celebrate the milestones and the journey colleagues have been on over the last three years. Look out for that film soon.
Swindon OPG Celina de Souza said: ‘Teamwork is very important for us. It’s vital to work as a team for our PSM to be successful. To know we are processing so many millions of items that we couldn’t do before – it’s amazing.’
National service delivery director, Ricky McAulay, added: ‘This is great news in terms of where we’re heading as a business. The PSMs give us cost advantage but also revenue protection on those parcels that we don’t get anywhere near as good through manual processing.’

I Wrote-During Covid-Which is still relevant now
It's good to get these types of threads, the ridiculous my manager said bollox, so we can reassure ourselves that while the world is falling apart, Royal Mail managers are still being the low-life C***S they have always been.

The daily grind of having to argue your case with an intellectual pigmy of a line manager is physically and emotionally draining.

I wonder what percentage of those parcels reached their destinations intact?
