A WAR-HERO who worked for Royal Mail for more than three decades has hit out over the sorry state of his local postbox.
Harry Franklin, 85, of Grovesnor Lodge in South Woodford, fought the Nazis in Africa, Italy and Sicily before returning to London and starting work for the Post Office in 1947.
He retired in 1982 and says that he is appalled at the neglect shown to his local postbox and the dismissive attitude of management staff when he raised the issue.
Mr Franklin said: "I've very upset with how I was treated. That postbox has not had a lick of paint or a clean for the 20 years that I have lived here and when I told them they didn't want to know.
"I realise that these jobs are now given over to sub-contractors but it's supposed to be a public service at the end of the day. It's absolutely disgusting that they can't be bothered to do their job."
A spokeswoman for Royal Mail said: "Royal Mail has 115,000 post boxes across the country and we operate a three year maintenance contact whereby boxes would be repainted once every three years - as well as responding to emergencies like vandalism.
"It would therefore be highly unlikely that this box has not been painted or cleaned for 20 years but we will of course look into the case and we apologise that our customers feels his complaint has not been taken seriously."
They even sent a photographer to take a piccy of it
He has a point though it is a bit grotty.

Yeah, it's supposed to be, but for how long? RM no longer care about residential mail, only bulk postings and DSA.
Oh, he also says "I'm very upset with how I was treated". Well we know how that feels.

The one on my round has been all but destroyed collection plate gone front of lock smashed off bottom all but rusted away with guess for it dog piss and it gets worse if you dare open it!.
