Straubing - A postwoman in a small Bavarian town faces charges for hiding 10 000 mail items in her bedroom to cut her workload, German police said on Friday.

Police detained the 21-year-old woman with around 150 undelivered items as she deposited them in her car after leaving work in the town of Straubing.

She had been stealing mail since the autumn of last year, they said, after finding 13 sacks and five washing baskets full in her bedroom.

Deutsche Post, the former state monopoly, said it intended to deliver the mail to residents in the community of about 45 000.

The incident comes amid a continuing political debate on the wages of lowly-paid workers.

A minimum wage for postal workers of around 9 euros (about R93) an hour was imposed by the federal parliament from the beginning of the year, when it lost its monopoly on delivering letters.

Competitors said they would be forced to cut thousands of staff.

BUFFALO, N.Y. (AP) - A 50-year-old postal employee has been sentenced to a year of probation, including six months' home confinement, for making false expense reimbursement claims.

Margaret M. Cio, of Buffalo, pleaded guilty in September to theft of public money.

Prosecutors say that in 2002 and 2003 she embezzled from the Postal Service by submitting vouchers for about $15,0000 in travel expenses she did not incur.

Her job was to travel among postal facilities to check for security issues.

Security issues eh? Maybe if she'd investigated herself she'd have found a security issue with someone stealing money from her employer :Very Happy
