Postie's perk leads to jail sentences for conmen

A LITTLE known postman's perk helped uncover an identity theft gang who stood to gain hundreds of thousands of pounds from banks.
Royal Mail staff in Spalding uncovered the scam after initially believing they were dealing with an instance of stolen mail. The conmen targeted potentially wealthy victims after obtaining their personal details from publicly available information held by Companies House. But the scam came unstuck when they stole the identity of Spalding postman Gary Allen, Lincoln Crown Court was told.

Jonathan Eley, prosecuting, said one of the fraudsters contacted the Royal Mail in Spalding asking to stop delivering Mr Allen’s mail to his home address – so they could collect it themselves from a sorting office. But managers became suspicious as they knew Mr Allen was a postman and, as a perk of the job, postmen do not pay for their mail to be stopped.

Moses Awofadeju (29), Daniel Reid (28) and Craig Richards (34,) all from north London, and Ross Gillespie (24), from Glasgow, all admitted conspiracy to defraud in June last year.

They were given prison sentences ranging from nine months to six years.
