Just started and not sure where I'm working!

Post by Zesty2002 »

Hi all. Just looking for some help/advice

I accepted a postman/postwoman with driving job at my local small delivery office and had my first day yesterday. From what I can work out, this small DO is managed by a larger/main DO 16 or so miles away which also manages another small DO.

So I turn up at 8am as instructed to the small DO only to be told that they don't know why there was a job advertised there as there were never any jobs going in the first place. They phoned the manager at the main DO, told him to expect me and that he'll find something for me to do there.

My partner drove me to the main DO (he has business car insurance), we found the manager and had a chat about the situation. Turns out the manager is covering for 2 weeks so isn't up to speed. He knew someone was starting but didn't know where. He also couldn't explain why the regular manager would advertise a job at the small DO when there weren't any jobs going! My contract hasn't arrived yet and with it being a Saturday he couldn't check with HR about the location of the job I had accepted. In all the emails and phone calls I've had with HR it's always been that I would be based at the small DO, no mention of the main DO, so I am assuming when I eventually receive my contract it will say I work at the small DO.

So we agreed that on Monday, I'll sign on at the main DO at 8am and the manager and I would phone HR and check what's what.
So my questions are:
1. For Monday, will my car insurance cover me for driving straight from home to the main DO? As I don't have business insurance
2. Should I be signing on at the main DO? Reading around on here it looks like if my location is based at the small DO I should be signing on there and then transport arranged to the main DO if they want me there.
3. If it's the case that there are no jobs going at the small DO and they instead want me working at the main DO can they just change my work location on my contract? Or will it be the case that they have to arrange transport for me to get from the small DO to the main DO if I can refuse to change my contract? I don't mind which DO they want me at, as I live in between the two, but I would prefer to be at the smaller DO as it is slightly closer, plus it's much smaller and quieter compared to the main DO.
4. In the offer from HR, it states that I will be working on a permanent contract of 30 hours. According to the manager, there are no jobs at the main DO which are 30 hours (I think they are all 35/36 hours). Again, can they just change that in my contract?

Sorry for the long winded post and I hope it makes sense!
Any help/advice would be much appreciated
