Royal Mail management issues

Post by mo_ivy »

I was wondering if anyone can help me with a presentation I’m doing; its on Royal Mail & the issues employees have with the managers.

Rather than take biased or in-accurate information off the internet I thought I would ask you direct.

So if anyone can help & outline any issues it will be appreciated.

Thank you.

I'd be careful here people.

Mo read through the board, there's enough there.

It's good to get these types of threads, the ridiculous my manager said bollox, so we can reassure ourselves that while the world is falling apart, Royal Mail managers are still being the low-life C***S they have always been.

The daily grind of having to argue your case with an intellectual pigmy of a line manager is physically and emotionally draining.

In order to assist you with your presentation, may I suggest the following:

As many students or researchers do in situations like this you should prepare a questionnaire that will cover any issues that your work is likely to encompass - a bit like our "Have your say" exercise, but more likely to have results.

Information does not automatically become inaccurate and biased as it arrives on the internet, unless on sites hosted by vested interests or political parties - in truth, on forums such as this, it gives the provider an opportunity to express themselves with little fear of reprisal and thus is pretty reliable. From my experience of over 40 years of employment as both manager and staff in a number of businesses, I would assess this particular site as a very good barometer of present feelings within Royal Mail and suggest that you follow Postman's advice and trawl through the topics to get what you need.

If someone has raised a particular issue that intrigues you then PM them and hope for cooperation in your research.

P.S. A look at your credentials might be in order before you ask any more questions - good luck !.

I've worked for a ex nationalised industry and basically you get the worst of the old culture and the worst of the new corporate culture .

1 The 60's style Management Control system has been replaced by a Regimented Corporate Command & Control Top Down 70's style , Unite the Manager's union or what was Amicus /CMA are highly critical of it . That style started with those two brothers who used to run IBM , problem is that talented people jumped ship and started their own companies i.e. Packard etc . Many firms used it as a macho management style in the 80's .

2 RM's style is very negative / unhealthy , Leighton runs a FUD style , fear , uncertainity and doubt , there's a emphasis on conformity , the management system tends to run for the benefit of it's own managers instead of actually running things . However it wasn't much good anyway."Management Guru " Leighton has a frightening appetite for self publicity , it's all ideas borrowed from elsewhere . He talks a good job , that's for sure .

3 The problems are that Area Management tend to do the dirty work for Personnel / Human Resources who dictate policy from 148, Old Street . There's problems with the old Scottish Mafia being replaced by people who don't understand the Industry or Non Ops Senior Managers ."Pressure for change " apparently, not bullying ?!

4 RM have never done responsibility just "authority " , naturally there's a blame culture but it's always been autocratic . It fosters a them and us approach with both blue and white shirts .
FOZZIEBEAR is a very good source in posts /threads , the same goes for Ex Royal Mail Manager or even the mod True Blue Terrier being ex services and being used to a better chain of command .

So what can the managers actually do to make life working at RM easier & more efficient?

Oh right, I am still looking to do my dissertation on Royal Mail but that will be a more in depth (full of substance piece of work) due in the summer; this is only a 30 minute presentation on how the managers at Royal Mail are getting it wrong.

So if anyone can highlight the main issues I will be grateful. For instance do posties get bonus related pay? Do managers appreciate the work that is done & if so how do they show their appreciation? I just need an insight on how managers in RM work.

bonus related pay ?
That's opening a right ...

Basically we went from having a bonus system that no-one could understand, (including managers),
to having a bonus system that we can understand but not achieve.
Any savings from the DO budget are split 50/50 between the business and the staff. Sounds good, but in practise lower budgets mean less scope for us earning any bonus.
