Protests fail to save post offices

Royal Mail bosses are sweeping aside public protests to press ahead with post office closures, claim campaigners.

The protesters have branded promises to consult customers about threatened closures a sham.

A total of 2,500 post offices have been earmarked for the axe. But, of the first 230 which have gone out for consultation, only 10 have been saved.

Ken Parsons, of the Rural Shops Alliance, said: "This is a wake-up call for everyone involved with local communities - post office branches are going to close.

"The public consultations are not changing the decisions to close branches to any great extent."

In the last eight years 4,000 post offices have been closed.

Royal Mail chief Adam Crozier says customers are deserting post offices for the internet and phone banking and the cuts are the only way to stem £4million-a week losses.
