Thousands of people queued for hours in the freezing cold yesterday to pick up Christmas parcels postmen hadn't delivered.

Furious customers accused the Royal Mail of leaving the collection notices rather than knocking on doors to deliver the packets. Many said they had been in when the postman came.

In Bristol, more 150 people queued for hours to collect undelivered parcels at the city's Royal Mail depot at Totterdown.

Teaching assistant Natasha Dolman, 27, said: "I've queued for two hours because they said my parcel would not go through the door. It's a book, for goodness sake. Everyone is talking about how the postmen hadn't even tried to deliver the parcels."

Occupational therapist Ingrid Lederer, 29, said: "I've been trying to pick up a parcel for weeks, but they said it isn't here."

Marketing manager Lucy Hamilton, 31, queued for hours in Acton, West London, only to be told two parcels she's waited for since November were not there.

Some of the delivery problems have been blamed on a huge increase in internet orders this year. Watchdog Postwatch are investigating the complaints. A spokesman said: "If a service has been paid for, they should get it."

A Royal Mail spokesman said: "We're on track to deliver all items which were posted in time for Christmas, by Christmas."

They may have been in but were they all there at the time for posties love to stand at a door for two minutes to fill out a p739 form (while you were out we could not deliver an item) and carry it round for 3 to 4 hour's and then take it back to the office maybe 1 hours travelling time. we provide a sevice not a nursery for the can you get me up if you can brigade.
