Royal Mail explains poor postal service in Welwyn Garden City

Reports of missed postal deliveries in Welwyn Garden City have prompted an apology from Royal Mail.

Numerous Welwyn Garden City residents have commented on social media recently about a lack of postal deliveries in the postcodes AL7 and AL8.

People have reported having no post at all for up to two weeks, or receiving a week’s worth of post after a long gap.

Other reported glitches included not receiving much-needed replacement bank cards, and sent letters not arriving with their recipients.

Carol Mulhern, who lives in AL8, said that she has been waiting for her disabled son’s bus pass to arrive after it was sent on July 30, and now is waiting for a second one that she had to ask the council to issue.

“We could have done with it, as he has had a few hospital appointments this month so it has been rather frustrating waiting for it to arrive,” she told the Welwyn Hatfield Times.

“It’s also worrying that a pass is out there somewhere with his picture on it, especially as he’s a vulnerable child having learning differences, [what with] data protection and all that!”

A Royal Mail spokesman told the Welwyn Hatfield Times: “We have been experiencing some periods of higher than average sick absence in our Welwyn Garden City delivery office recently, which has resulted in some intermittent disruption to our services.

“Whilst we have been doing all we can to maintain delivery services to all customers, we apologise to those customers who have been affected.

“We are confident that we will be able to restore a high quality of service to all our customers very soon.”
