Man killed in Kingstanding Road crash near Royal Mail's Great Barr office

A man has died and two other men are fighting for their lives after a van hit a tree near the Royal Mail's Great Barr delivery office.

Kingstanding Road was closed after the smash, which also involved a car, happened at around 6.45pm on Wednesday.

The van driver, a man aged 31, was found in cardiac arrest. Firefighters were carrying out CPR as ambulance staff arrived.

Crews took over but nothing further could be done to save the man and he was confirmed dead at the scene.

The other men had also injured in the collision.

They both received specialist care before being taken to Birmingham's Queen Elizabeth Hospital.

Doctors travelled with both patients to continue emergency treatment en-route.

West Midlands Ambulance Service said both were in a critical condition.

The crash happened on the busy route close to the delivery office between Old Oscott and Kingstanding.

Kingstanding Road was partially closed in the early hours of Thursday morning while investigations continued.

Superintendent Sean Phillips, of West Midlands Police, said: “We are currently dealing with a very serious collision and working with partner agencies to establish what caused this collision to happen.

“Our thoughts and deepest sympathies are with the family of the man who has lost his life and those who have been injured or caught up in this incident."

Anyone who witnessed the crash is asked to call police on 101, quoting log 2184 of 25 April.

Several ambulance crews including those in Midlands Air Ambulance from Cosford and from Staffordshire in a rapid response car attended.
