Birkenhead postman Richie Hellon walks from Prenton Park to Dover

POSTMAN has raised more than £4,000 for brave Edie Molyneux after walking almost 300 miles in six days from Prenton Park to Dover Athletic's stadium.

Tranmere Rovers season ticket holder Richie Hellon, from Birkenhead, was going to watch his team’s clash against Dover Athletic on Friday, March 30 but decided to walk there to raise cash for three-year-old Edie.

Spider-man fan Edie is currently undergoing treatment in Mexico for Diffuse Intrinsic Pontine Glioma (DIPG) – a rare and inoperable brain tumour.


Edie travelled to Monterrey in January to receive IA chemotherapy and immunotherapy which is not available on the NHS.

In order to have the treatment, Edie's family set up The Spider-Ede Appeal to raise cash for the ground-breaking treatment.

So far £140,698 of the £700,000 target has been raised.

A postman for 21 years, Richie embarked on the mammoth challenge, hoping to raise £1,000 from the walk but surpassed his target by £2,988.30 on the Justgiving page with more donations still coming in.

Richie managed to complete the walk with severely blistered feet - only to find that the match had been postponed.

The fixture has since been re-scheduled for Tuesday, April 17 at 7.45pm.

Once he finished his gruelling feat, he was met by members of the Tranmere Rovers Official Supporters Club (TROSC) who stepped in to give him a lift home on their supporter's bus.

Speaking after the challenge Richie said: "I'm just really really pleased that I made it. It was a long six days.

"A massive thank you to everyone who supported.

"I couldn't believe the fundraising total when I saw it.

"Everyone has been so amazing and generous. I want to say a big thank you to Steve Smith who organised my accommodation and was always on the end of the phone when needed.

"Thanks to the TROSC for their generosity and the lift home after my walk - I'm just going to chill for the next few days now and have a well earned rest!"

Plans are in place to have Richie walk out onto the pitch for the next Rovers game.


Edie’s mum Ashleigh said: “The amazing walk by Richie came to an end on Friday, he walked for almost 300 miles from Tranmere to Dover Athletic's stadium.

“He suffered swollen and blistered feet, a slight panic on Wednesday night when he couldn't check into his hotel, but he arrived on Friday around 1pm.

“Sadly the match was then postponed due to the pitch being waterlogged, however he still managed to get back home on the supporter's bus and has so far raised an amazing £3,988.30.”
