Post office in Joan Collins ad is a fake ... around the corner from a real one which was axed weeks ago
By MARTIN DELGADO - Last updated at 23:14pm on 8th December 2007

If the advertisements are to be believed, it's one of Britain's new-look post offices.

With its freshly painted facade gleaming in the sunshine, it is presented to millions of TV viewers as a "people's post office" – a high-street business offering "more than just stamps".

But the smart building in which the sub-postmaster gives a rousing speech to his staff about the service's importance to the community – while Joan Collins waits at the counter – is actually a lighting and bathroom shop in Richmond, Surrey.

And it stands just 300 yards away from a real post office – which was controversially closed down weeks before the advert was filmed.

The decision to film in a town where there were protests at the closure of the branch six months earlier has provoked an outcry.

Liberal Democrat MP Susan Kramer accused Post Office bosses of "despicable" behaviour.

She said: "As a result of their closure programme, Richmond town centre has only one post office left – and that's on the first floor of WH Smith.

"Instead of paying to have the bathroom shop done up, they should have spent the money on reopening the subpost office, which was heavily used, particularly by old people.

"This adds insult to injury."

The shop, which was empty at the time, was painted red and green for the filming and then blue in time for it to reopen as a lighting and bathroom outlet.

Proprietor Mark Holloway said: "We were approached by a film-location company who said they wanted a corner premises.

"They paid for the repainting and a nominal fee on top.

"The filming was done before we moved in."

The pretence was uncovered after resident Jenny Wright, who lives in the road, recognised the shop while watching television one evening.

"I was absolutely astonished to see it disguised as a post office," she said.

The Post Office's campaign features 60-second adverts directed by writer and comedian Armando Iannucci.

But its launch coincided with wildcat strikes by postal workers and the start of a Government cost-cutting programme under which 2,500 branches will close by the end of next year.

It is the latest in a series of public relations disasters by the Post Office.

Last month, The Mail on Sunday revealed how a secret hitlist of branches facing the axe was mistakenly posted on the internet.

A Post Office spokesman said: "We filmed for one day only in Richmond outside a vacant shop whose exterior only we mocked up at minimal cost with a logo and posters on the window.

"We didn't want to cause any disruption to customers entering or leaving any of our 14,100 branches."

He said Ms Collins had acted out her role in a West London studio.

It's good to get these types of threads, the ridiculous my manager said bollox, so we can reassure ourselves that while the world is falling apart, Royal Mail managers are still being the low-life C***S they have always been.

The daily grind of having to argue your case with an intellectual pigmy of a line manager is physically and emotionally draining.

The Ad agency MOTHER pinched the" inspiring speech " idea off Peter Kay's Phoenix nights Series 2 Episode 1 , that bit when Brian Potter gets all his staff in and does the speech in the burnt out club .

Obviously they can't even do anything original. The ad agency must have been told to push the teamworking bit by RM.It's laughable as RM have stated that many of their managers do not have the skills to "move our teams forward ", "We'll have to train them or pay them up " .

The stupidest idea was the glossy great fun to play question poster in 2005 , all this rubbish about team working being fun , and Fred being off again so I won't go home on time. That's the sort of thing they'd use on kids aged 8-10 in a Public School to brainwash them.

I've seen one poster which they filmed a LA with the stormproof and bag in a central lancs carpark on his "round " , he's quoted with all this spiel about a bonus scheme .

RM surpassed themselves with a "Messiah " manager having a picture taken of staff traying up CFC rejects for a leaflet that got posted out as " direct & clear communication " . They'd 12 people segueing to 1st & 2nd class flats & letters into eight trays , Then there's a picture of a once professonial scivver & argumentive barrack room lawyer that became a word processor for the MCM and went on the road to Damuscus being "quoted" with all this tosh about how good the new bonus scheme is .

The same manager fixed the "morale boosting new car prize draw " for a non -member ex manager's son to win .They don't give a s**t as long as it ticks the required boxes .

Apparently the US Army in World War 1 did intelligence tests and some tested were what would be medically classified as cretins , idiots etc . There was a significant amount of soldiers that had a mental age of 8-10.

The advertising business has traditionally aimed thier advertising at a 8-10 year old level ever since .

That just adds insult to injury! First they close a badly needed Post Office, then make a mock up, to film in.

It's just another example of the mercinary attitude of crozier and leighton. They couldn't care less about the Customers. It's just lucky, that there are still so many of us left, who DO care about the Service, and the Customers.
