Residents vow to fight to reinstate postwoman

RESIDENTS have vowed to fight for the reinstatement of a popular post-woman who was mysteriously sacked.

More than 100 signatures representing homes on the regular Reigate round of former postwoman Sharon Falvey were added to a petition, which was presented to Royal Mail this week.

Ms Falvey, of Huddlestone Crescent, Merstham, who has delivered mail for 15 years, was sacked two weeks ago,leaving residents in shock and dismay.

Residents from Carlton Road, Windmill Way, Millview Close, Woodcrest Walk, Windmill Drive and The Ridings have rallied round and added their names to the petition to get Ms Falvey her job back.

Grandmother-of-five Pamela Schwenk, 63, of Carlton Road, Reigate, who has been gathering signatures,described her as "the best neighbourhood watch you could ask for".

Mrs Schwenk said: "She knew everything that was going on. We miss her and want to see her back again."

Ms Falvey's sacking followed a two-month suspension which was allegedly the result of comments made by her in the Reigate sorting office, in Rushworth Road.

Royal Mail refused to comment on the dismissal but unconfirmed comments from a source inside Reigate sorting office suggested her departure followed an anonymous complaint.

Alan Burke, 61, of Windmill Way, Reigate, who wrote to Royal Mail to express his support, has been collecting signatures along his road and Mill View Close since Friday.

Mr Burke said: "Most of the people I spoke to signed as soon as they knew it was about Sharon. Everyone I have spoken to just said, 'This is ludicrous'."

"She did so much for the community here and was always a friendly face. She would bring people's bins in for them. It was just the way she was.

"When someone was ill she went around the neighbourhood with a card for everyone to sign - that is the sort of person she is."

A meeting with Ms Falvey and her bosses was held in Redhill on Tuesday and residents were hopeful their petition and support would sway any decision made by Royal Mail bosses.

The petition was handed to Ms Falvey on Sunday in preparation for her hearing and loyal residents have vowed that their support will stay strong regardless of any decision.

Mr Burke said: "We will support Sharon as far as this goes.We are all behind her."

Ms Falvey has preferred not to comment for fear of jeopardising the appeal, but thanked her supporters.

I disagree. It only takes a couple of minutes a day to help your customers. A quick chat, carry their shopping from the bus stop to their door, helping them down steps etc. A few seconds helping someone shouldn't be penalised by having extra work shoved onto your delivery. Whatever you do, don't tell the management that we like to help our customers and we don't do it to make a few quid in tips or for praise or even just in case we need help from them, but because most of us are decent, honest, hardworking and caring citizens living in the community we are happy and proud to serve. Of course, with the current heading of HMS Royal Mail, I can see that the concept of serving the public is of far less importance than serving the needs of big business.

I'm still here TOMMO keeping an eye on things just not posting as much that's all. Went to the Burslem meeting to give my support. The atmosphere and workplace climate is bad in our office, God knows what the boys and girls have to put up with at Burslem DO. Let's hope the top officials in the union can deliver on their promise to support Burslem all the way. -----------------KAWAK

S****hawks out of their depth trying to justify their jobs and looking for brownie points .Any little thing that can be blown out of perspective & proportion to construct a case against .

I'd it done to me by a Council Worker writing a cock & bull story on behalf of a member of staff.in a ex nationalised industry I tackled the cowardly bully of a manager by saying what's the next bit ? -When Zebbedee got out of the box . Fought fire with fire . That's what you get -Concentration camp mentality management , as long as it's not me in trouble .

Even the CBI stated that Concentration Camp Management was inefficent . Most Businesses have rejected the 70's Top Down Model.

That's how :lfo operates , Fear , Uncertaintity & Doubt + plenty of propaganda to keep people in line . Very much a 80's macho management style . IBM started it in the 60's with those two brothers .

It's all to soften people up and knock the stuffing out of them for privatisation . Watch for buyouts , Area & Senior Management have to prove their credentials , it has & CAN happen .

There was a bit of that in 2003 re Unofficial IA , but it got leaked to the Guardian .

I've seen plenty of it in the run up to privatisation , silent phone calls , managers hiding in bushes etc ,etc , one manager filmed someone when he was on annual leave , the union saved his job as Video Evidence wasn't admissable .

There's been cases of following people to get them on alcohol & drugs charges . They sacked a guy in Glasgow on the strength of an annoymous letter about dealing blow but he refused to take a drug's test . All reported in the staff paper for our benefit .

The other union had to get a driver out of prison after a crash and his alleged wacky baccy habit was "mysteriously" leaked to the press .

It got to the point of being childish , all this vindictive, hostile & confrontational nonsense and only furthered the them & us divide
