A former senior Royal Mail executive who admitted trying to meet a teenage girl for sexual activity was trapped on camera by a self-styled paedophile hunter.

Edmund Phipps, 50, was caught out when he arranged to meet a the girl aged 13 to 15 online for sexual activity in Bath but when he arrived there on July 12 last year, he was instead confronted by self-style paedophile hunter Danny Catcher, then police.

“I’m pleased to hear that Phipps has pleaded guilty to the offence," said the man, who calls himself Danny Catcher.

"He went to Bath in the summer of 2017 with the intention of meeting a child for sex.

“When I confronted him, he refused to admit what he had done. I immediately made a citizen’s arrest without using any force and he sat in the back of his car until police arrived."

Phipps, whose address was listed as Friary Road, Abbeymead, Gloucester at a previous hearing, pleaded guilty to a child sex offence at Bristol Crown Court on Wednesday.

He was understood to be an operations director for Royal Mail.

Phipps pleaded guilty to ‘attempting to engage in sexual activity with a child’ and is due to be sentenced at Bristol Crown Court on March 7.

“If he can meet a decoy child for sexual activity, he could meet a real child," said Danny Catcher.

"He is a danger to children and I am pleased to hear that he's pleaded guilty to the offences. I sincerely hope that this is a wake-up call and that he never goes online to groom or meet a child in the future.”

A Royal Mail spokesman said: “We can confirm that Mr Phipps is a former employee. He was off duties from the time he was arrested.”
